Albert Hall Proms date for Bacup musician

A TEENAGE cornet player from Bacup will be taking to the stage of the Royal Albert Hall in London to play in the prestigious Proms concerts in August.

Luke Dempsey, 17, a former pupil at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School, is currently studying BTEC music at Leeds College specialising in trumpet.

He began playing with 2nd Rossendale Scout Group Band aged eight when he heard the band play as a Beaver.

“I am really excited about playing at the Proms,” said Luke, from Hoghton Avenue. “But I must confess I have never watched the Proms, although I have taken part in quite a few last night concerts with the band.”

He will attend a course with other players from the National Youth Brass Band before they play at the spectacular venue and his parents Janet and Kevin will proudly watch their son’s performance.

Luke is principal cornet with 2nd Rossendale Senior Band and had also been a guest player with Brighouse and Rastrick and Leyland Band.
