Three jailed for attack on Bacup club stewards

JAILED James Mulcahy JAILED James Mulcahy

THREE members of a gang who brought terror to a social club, where the steward and stewardess were subjected to vicious attacks, have been jailed.

Burnley Crown Court heard how stewardess Emma Pearson was kicked to the head, stamped on and left unconscious in the incident at Th'Owd Con Club in Irwell Terrace, Bacup, whilst her husband John was headbutted and thumped.

James Mulcahy, 22, of Tong Lane, who started the trouble by headbutting Mr Pearson, was locked up for 11 months.

Catherine Mulcahy, 29, of Russell Street, who assaulted Mrs Pearson, received 28 months behind bars. Bridie Sparks, 23, of Market Street, who punched Mr Pearson, got eight months.

Patrick Mulcahy, 26, James’s uncle, of Tong Lane, walked free from court, after admitting using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour.

He received 14 weeks in custody, suspended for a year, with 120 hours unpaid work.

All defendants, who live in Bacup, were banned from the club for two years.

James and Catherine Mulcahy and Sparks all pleaded guilty to assault and affray.

The court was told the violence began after James Mulcahy took exception to something the landlord said.

Mulcahy was then seen hitting and kicking two people, one of whom might have been the landlord again.

Catherine Mulcahy launched a ‘quite deliberate’ assault on the landlady after Sparks snatched the phone from the victim as she tried to call the police.

Mrs Pearson was hit around the head with a shoe, fell down and was then kicked in the head and stamped on.

Mulcahy waved her shoe around and went on the rampage, hitting people and smashing a stool.

Sentencing, Judge Lunt said: “Any violence against licencees will not be tolerated.

"There must be an immediate custodial sentence.”

They should put these mugshots on a big sign outside the town with 'Welcome to Bacup' underneath.

Or give them to the army to use as targets.

These two families of inbreds plus the other three well known pond dwellers have run riot in the town, as if they own, it for decades. Get rid of them and you will solve 95% of Bacup's problems.

The local police know them and so do the rest of Bacup, but have failed to do anything constructive. This lack of action cost one poor girl her life thanks to them! SCUM!

The Mulcahy's amongst the biggest troublesome families in bacup along with the taylors they've been running amok here since there family arrived from ireland a few generations ago so my old dad used to tell me as he's a dubliner also ..They've been causing hassle around here for generations and the police know it! i think the police are afraid of the big families of the valley because there's so many of them.. don't judge bacup people on these filth most folks here are descent people who just like to get on.. These swines need to be thrashed in public to send out a message to the rest of there kind

Why blame the police, these families have thousands of convictions between then, it's the courts that keep letting them out

Excellent point. The names of these families and one or two others in Bacup have dragged the place down. Weak sentencing for repeat offending (One family member must have been to court for house burglary getting on for 10 times with hundreds and hundreds of burglaries committed) with elder members of the family reveling in their behavior rather than trying to stop it.
