Blitz launched on Bacup teen boozers

A CRACKDOWN on gangs of booze-fuelled teenagers in Bacup is being launched.

Lancashire Police is joining forces with Lancashire County Council to create the new Community Alcohol Network (CAN) which aims to tackle underage drinking in the town.

The move comes in response to complaints from traders and residents about juvenile nuisance.

Yobs as young as nine went on a wrecking spree in the town in August throwing petrol bombs and smashing up shop windows.

Off-licence staff will be given access to a unique mobile phone number, which will link them directly through to the police, so they can respond quickly to any signs of trouble.

The action forms part of national Alcohol Awareness Week which includes test purchase operations, anti social behaviour patrols and talks to schools and colleges.

Special Constables, Neighbourhood Policing Teams and Trading Standards officers will be on patrol across the area seizing alcohol from underage drinkers while ensuring it is being sold responsibly.

Posters will be displayed in shops and pubs across the area and leaflets will be posted through people’s doors.

Jan Meadowcroft, who owns Options hairdressers, in Rochdale Road Bacup, said: “It isn’t that long ago that the windows of my shop were smashed by teenagers.

“I think this is a very positive move for the town and something desperately needed.

“A lot of my customers are too intimidated to walk past big gangs of youths.”

Inspector Judith Finney said: “We are aware of the negative impact underage drinking and anti-social behaviour can have on our communities and I hope this new network helps to improve the quality of life for people living, working and visiting Bacup and the surrounding areas.”

The project, to be launched on Friday, will also see Trading Standards officers speaking to retailers and talking to adults about the consequences of buying alcohol for children.

County Coun Albert Atkinson, Cabinet Member for Trading Standards at LCC, said: "Underage drinking is a serious problem today, and the North West suffers some of the highest levels of alcohol-related harm in England."

Until the authorities use their common sense and start targeting the parents of these under-age drinkers I'm afraid not a lot will change. Pick up the kids, take them home and fine the parents!! Simples!!

Unfortunately alcohol is readily available at supermarkets everywhere in volume and cheap. Many folk buy it to drink at home and parents do not always keep a check on their children. When i was a child Bacup had a great reputation and a lot of places for kids to play and be occupied with their parents, but parents often do not do activities with the children these days now the television is the third parent. We had a swimming baths, two picture houses, a dance hall, and a railway line to Waterfoot and Rawtenstall where there was other entertainment. There were also dance-halls and pride in keeping busy doing little jobs to help local folk. We need to get pride back into the area and youth-clubs etc.

It will carry on as long as the Pied Piper (and everyone knows who he is) is allowed to walk the streets.

One was a big FAT yob (overgrown) with the mental age of a 2 yr old who is more than happy to brag of his case being dropped due to the cctv cameras not having a clear enough picture. The curse of his family on Bacup lives on!!!!Happily pushing prams round in the day with overstretched jogging pants and more children brought into the world who will more than likely follow in this pigs footsteps..
.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.

I'm an OAP volunteer with the Be Your Best Foundation's "UK Rock Challenge" events around the UK. This year over 20,000 young people from over 300 schools took part, from as far north as Inverness to as far south as Eastbourne and Bournemouth.

Evidence from the schools and their students shows that levels of smoking, alcohol and drug abuse, truancy and conflict with teachers drop. Staying-on rates go up, and apparently the lists of families wanting their young people to go to schools taking part get longer. Most telling: once they've taken part once, young people come back year after year, right up until they're 18 - it's awesome ! :)

Sadly, the BYBF receives no national funding: the UK Rock Challenge involves big stages, lighting and sound rigs, and events only happen where there is "local area" fundraising to bring it in: you might guess how hard that has been this year and for the next :-/

This year's report is at http://tinyurl.com/d

Come on Inspector Finney, youv'e been given the information you need. Take a step into reality and stop **** footing around. Take the bull by the horns and drive these verminous slimeballs off the streets.

You know who they are. Do something!
