A HOLIDAY ended in tragedy when a father-of-three was found hanged, an inquest heard.

Nick Crook, 47, of Rochdale Road, Bacup, was discovered dead at holiday accommodation in Fuerteventura on May 21 last year.

But East Lancashire coroner Richard Taylor said he ‘could not be certain’ that Mr Crook intended to commit suicide.

He had been on holiday with his girlfriend Vanessa Grant but she found him hanged at their apartment after returning from drinking with friends.

The inquest at Burnley Magistrates’ Court heard the couple had been rowing that day and that Mr Crook had talked about killing himself.

Ms Grant said: “We had gone together on a planned holiday.

“On the day of Nick’s death, we had been bickering at the side of the pool where couples were.

“He wasn’t socialising and I said to him that he needed to socialise as it was making me uncomfortable.

“We went back to the room and I said to him that if he was going to make it difficult, I would leave him.

“He then said he was going to hang himself, which I didn’t think he was being serious about as he’d never said anything like that before.

“I last spoke to Nick that day at about 8.30/9pm after arguing with him again, when I then went with a couple to have some drinks.

“It would have been sometime after 11 that I got back from having a drink.

“As I made my way back to the apartment, the lights were on and the windows and doors were open.

“It was then that I found Nick dead.”

A post mortem examination was conducted by a Spanish doctor who found injuries consistent with hanging.

The inquest heard how Mr Crook had taken 'two or three overdoses' in the past.

The court also heard from Mr Crook's former wife Nicola Crook, who said that he had difficulty accepting their separation in 2005.

Ms Crook described Mr Crook as a 'good husband' and a good dad who would always do anything for his daughters, Skye and twins Paige and Naomi.

She said: "Nick did really struggle with the separation.

"But over the years, he accepted there was no going back and we were really good friends.

"I had a conversation with him before he went on holiday with his partner and he said there had been some difficulties in the relationship and that it was a make or break holiday."

Recording a conclusion that Mr Crook hanged himself, Coroner Richard Taylor said: “I cannot beyond doubt conclude that he intended to kill himself.”
