AN MP has said she is ‘appalled’ after a frenzied attack on two paramedics attending an emergency call.

Burnley’s MP Julie Cooper described an assault on paramedics Andrew Ormerod and John Liddle as ‘violent and vicious’.

Mr Ormerod, who is based in Burnley, was spat out, punched and assaulted as he tried to help a man who was lying in Lane End Road, Bacup bleeding.

He was left with spinal injuries, while his colleague Mr Liddle who assisted him, was also attacked and left with a fractured hand.

Police arrested the man and are now investigating the incident which happened just before 8pm on Sunday (December 3).

Ms Cooper said: “I was appalled to hear about this violent and vicious attack on Mr Ormerod and his colleague whilst they were carrying out their duty as paramedics.

“Paramedics do an incredibly skilled and challenging job, frequently putting themselves at risk in the service of others.

“The fact that the paramedics continued to treat the individual concerned even after he had attacked them says a great deal about their professionalism and dedication.

“I am pleased to hear that this serious incident is being investigated by the Lancashire constabulary and that charges are likely.

“Both the paramedics concerned and the off-duty police officer who stepped in to assist them, have my absolute respect and appreciation.”

Lancashire Telegraph readers have also spoken out against the brutal attack, describing it as 'disgusting'.

Paul McDowall said: "Anybody who attacks our emergency services should receive a ten year sentence, no messing about, and maybe it would instil a little respect into the scumbags."

Sinead Anne Howard said: "Disgusting behaviour.

"Paramedics should be able to refuse to treat them."

James Driver said: "Just no need at all."

Jean Bain added: "If they don't want the paramedic to help them, then the paramedic should have the choice to walk away, as their safety should come first in situations such as this."
