A 21-YEAR-OLD man claimed he smashed windows at an unmanned police station because he wanted to get arrested to get him out of his flat.

Blackburn magistrates heard Kieron Matthew Furtado waited outside Bacup police station and when he wasn’t arrested walked to Waterfoot police station where he smashed another window.

Furtado, of Market Street, Bacup, pleaded guilty to causing £1,500 of damage to five windows at Bacup and £200 to a single window at Waterfoot.

He was remanded on bail for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Enza Geldard, prosecuting, said officers in Waterfoot police station heard a loud bang and looked out to see a man walking across the car park.

Furtado was chased and arrested and admitted smashing the window.

“The clothes he was wearing matched the description of the person who had smashed the windows at Bacup police station earlier that evening,” said Mrs Geldard.

“He was asked about that and admitted responsibility.”

In interview Furtado said he had been in his flat in Bacup but had not been drinking or taking alcohol.

He went to the police station and smashed the windows because he wanted to be arrested because he needed to get out of his flat.

He said he knew there was nobody in at Bacup and had looked through the window at Waterfoot before throwing a brick at the window.

Furtado, who was not represented, said it was not his normal behaviour.

“It was a bad day,” he said. “My normal days are not normally that bad.

“I am trying to get my mental health sorted out and have been to see my doctor.”.
