The woman, who had left a pan unattended, called firefighters after hearing her smoke alarm sounding.

Before firefighters arrived a neighbour went in to the house and put a fire blanket over the pan.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus went in to the house, shortly after 5.20pm on Monday, and took the pan outside before putting it out.

Firefighters used a fan to clear smoke from the house.

The oven suffered smoke and heat damage.

Meanwhile the kitchen and other parts of the house were also damaged by smoke.

Bacup watch manager Chris Haworth said: “I would like to urge people not to use conventional oil pans to make chips.

“I would encourage them to make oven chips, microwave chips or go to the chippie.

“If people have a chip pan fire I would also advise them to get out the house and call the fire service, rather than tackle it themselves.”

The woman’s injuries were treated at the scene and she did not need to go to hospital.
