Empty home in Stacksteads targetted by arsonists

AN UNOCCUPIED house in Stacksteads was the target of firebugs on Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters from Bacup were called to the end terrace house in Holme Street after children reported seeing a fire at the property.

Two engines attended the property at around 2.20 and stayed at the scene for about 30 minutes.

Watch manager Terry Nightingale said: “The back door had been kicked in and a small fire had been started in the downstairs kitchen area.

“There was light smoke damage to the kitchen unit and the ground floor of the property.

“There was no trace of accelerants but the fire had been started deliberately.

“The property had suffered quite severe vandalism.

“The kitchen units had been smashed off the walls and the decor had been spray-painted.

“It has been empty for a number of months and there was evidence that people had been sleeping rough.”

Police were called to secure the property.
