Opponents force Waterfoot rehab clinic delay

A REHAB clinic that was due to open in Waterfoot has been delayed because of objections from furious residents and businesses.

Bosses at East Lancashire charity Inspire planned to open the abstinence unit on the site of Glen Valley Guest House in Bacup Road in July.

But a further consultation has been announced after a backlash from traders, who said their opinion was not sought.

Three drop-in sessions will be held in the town this month before a final public meeting which has been scheduled for August 20.

The house will be used by up to six adult former drug addicts as part of their integration back into mainstream society.

Chris Smith, a member of local traders’ and residents’ group Waterfoot Forward, said: “Any contact with Inspire so far hasn’t been particularly productive.

“As a body Waterfoot Forward has remained neutral on the issue to facilitate the discussions between the relevant parties.

“But every individual member has their own opinions.

“Inspire may well be a very good organisation but they have moved too quickly. The people of Waterfoot do not want to be bulldozed.”

Trader Marie Buckley, who runs the Curiosity Shop, said: “At least now the council and owners will be answerable to the public.

“We realise that there is no chance of stopping the unit from going ahead but these consultation meetings give us the opportunity to ask the questions.”

A planning application submitted to Rossendale Council to change the use of the site from a bed and breakfast into a ‘supported housing scheme’ was deferred until a later date at a meeting of the council’s development control committee on July 17.

At a meeting in Waterfoot Social Club last month, Waterfoot Forward invited representatives from Inspire and Rossendale Council, but no-one from Inspire attended.

This consultation should have been done before it went to planning.
If it is such a good idea why were they not more open about it .This has caused bad feeling and lack of trust towards Inspire.
Because someone didn't do their job right.

I dont think it's moaning to get these people to do their job. They are well paid why should try to sneak things through.
If they did their job right they would have less hassle.

What a silly comment. What has Iran got to do with anything. These rules were put in place to protect us all. They should stick to them just like we have to do .

Yes and if all rules were fully enfoced we would be exactly like athird world country. The point I make is that if all opposition to was allowed to stop things like this rehab centre being allowed, we would never move forward.

Rossendale and Waterfoot as well are full of law-abiding folk who also have their addictions. They might be on 40 fags a day and three pints a night. There but for the grace of God .... They just haven't crossed the line into despair and desolation. So have some pity on those who need help. It might be you one day.

Did you ? I think if it was opened next door to you would you not want to know what it was all about , There is a lot of sympathy with this issue if people can get the chance to ask their questions and get honest answers that is all you can ask for.
Just what they should have done in the first place,

I don't have any problem with it. There are people struggling to deal with drug and alcohol addiction in every community in Rossendale and to think otherwise is just closing your eyes to the truth.

The people in this home would not be on drugs or alcohol any more - or they would not be in there. I read the literature and it is a condition of residence that you are in recovery.

So who is going to admit the real concern about this development - house prices.

Well said Hacked Off. Too many protest groups want to preserve their beautiful little village - though Waterfoot is hardly that. There Is just so much hot air and humbug. Now if they were protesting about the pubs and clubs in Rawtenstall serving the kids at the weekend then I would be the first to join up. Too many of these young kids get tanked up and then crash their old bangers.

House prices havn't been mentioned .This has been on the cards for months plenty of time to speak to and put peoples minds at rest. they didn't do it thats been the big problem. It will probably go though but we will know what it's all about and some may even support it.
