This article says how many babies are due to be born at Rossendale but surely we need to look at the figures of how many have actually been born there which states 30 during the first year of opening!!! Less than one per week! We should then ask the question why so few???
Birthing centres are dangerous! This was identified by NICE many years ago who stated in a report that stand alone birthing centres such as Rossendale doubled the chances of a baby dying! The report was squashed by the Department of Health who said that NICE should not say this and they had to change the wording to may increase the death of a babe!! Why? Because they had plans to amalgamate birthing units to save money as they have done at East Lancs Trust! These birthing units are understaffed and sometimes reliant on untrained Healthcare assitants to boost numbers and again to save money! Should any problems arise the mum has to be transferred to Burnley by ambulance which may not arrive for 15 minutes! The transfer could take at least half an hour, which could be too late!! The mother would be better at home as there she would have the undivided attention of a midwife but even that is not safe. Unfortunately midwifery today has too many midwives who think that they know better than the Consultants and push for these birthing centres and home deliveries in a quest for " Normal Birth " often with disastrous consequences! It should be stopped and these stand alone birthing centres such as at Rossendale and Blackburn should be closed!!
Birthing centres are not dangerous...if they are, as you claim, then put your money where you mouth is & lets have some figures from you & answer the following:

    1. How many births, in total, have there been at Rossendale, Burnley & Blackburn birthing centres since they opened?
    2. How may births became complicated & resulted in transfer to hospital?
    3. Of those transfers, how many ambulance delays were there?
    4. How may deaths, mother or baby, have their been which were then attributed to ambulance delays?
    4. How many midwives should each centre have available each day or are staff brought in for booked births?

Fact - midwives cannot overrule consultants & just open birthing centres & not many home births are supported by consultants because there are no medical facilities readily available in the event of problems. Undivided attention of a single midwife (regardless of where the birth takes place) cannot prevent those often 'disastrous consequences'...thes
e will happen from time to time because that is natures way & no amount of medical intervention will ever change that.

Women also want birth centres because they don't want to have their babies in clinical environments.

Your comments have no substance. Basically not one fact or figure quoted...its all it could happen, blatant scare mongering. Yes it could happen but you could get knocked down crossing the road tomorrow. Once you have figures you can accurately state the real risk percentage.

For the record, only women with a completely uncomplicated pregnancy can be booked to deliver at a birth centre otherwise they are booked into hospital. I think you will find that the majority of births still take place in hospital & of those in birthing centres...have a happy ending."

Record number of babies born in Rossendale’s Birth Centre

A RECORD number of babies are due to be born in Rossendale’s Birth Centre.

The unit, which opened in November 2010, delivered only 30 children during its first year.

But now more than 10 expectant mums per month are booked into the Bacup Road centre for the next few months.
