Bacup's 'Juliet Bravo' police station to become flats

A FORMER police station used for the TV series Juliet Bravo is to be turned into new homes – by a criminal lawyer.

Bacup Police Station sold last week at an auction in Manchester for £110,000, well above the £60,000 guide price.

Buyers Lesley Herman and her partner Paul Masselis, say they could now create up to six new flats. But Lesley, who lives in Altrincham, said she was mindful of the building’s heritage in Rossendale.

She said: “We do not intend to make a quick buck by renting the place out. We want to create affordable houses and won’t be drastically altering the outer appearance of the old station. By sand-blasting the front we can return it to its former Georgian glory and we will make the insides as modern as we possibly can.

“Obviously we’re dependent on planning permission but we have been in touch with the officers already.

“We want this to be part of the regeneration of Bacup.”

The couple, whose company is Character Buildings, hope to meet the owners of the nearby Market Hall, which has also been earmarked for development into housing by its owners, to discuss the future of the area. Bacup town centre’s status as an Urban Conservation Area means strict rules apply to any changes.

Lancashire police moved staff out of Bank Street after dry rot was discovered in October 2010.

Oh joy! - more flats in the town centre that no -one wants. Market Hotel, Yorkshire Bank both within 50 yards of the station not occupied. As Here from Here says - good luck - but I doubt if there will be any takers.

The old station and the market hall have great potential for character flats, but will it be able to and be affordable for Bacup? Best of British!

CORRECTION it has never been out intention to turn anything into flats! The building lends itself perfectly to terraced houses. The people of Bacup will have what they want- well built luxurious homes at an affordable price. The front of the building will be sandblasted to enhance it, other than that it won't be altered - Character Building(NW)ltd

Over my dead body! This is in it's original state from being built with the original court rooms and cells. It is part of our heritage and there are plans to fight it's redevelopment in a heritage area and keep it as it is. As with the market hall, these developers have met their match in Bacup. We don't want housing in Bacup town centre! Apart from anything else - who is going to live in them? No-one will buy them and no decent person will rent them in the town centre because of the drug and drink problems! So they will only be filled with the anti-social people who cause all the problems in Bacup.
