CHAOTIC traffic outside a new Rossendale school will be eased by proposals set to be passed next week.

Waterfoot Primary School, which opened in Wolfenden Green on January 9 after a merger with nearby Cloughfold Primary School, has been plagued by parking problems during peak times.

A ‘crash-friendly’ rebound bollard was recently installed outside a house on an approaching street, Park Road, so that a disabled child can safely access a special school bus.

New restrictions will also prevent parking along an 87 metre stretch on the west side of Park Road, between 8am and 6pm.

County councillor for Rossendale East, Jimmy Eaton has welcomed the moves.

He said: “ We have a brilliant new school in the area and the traffic issue was just a minor teething problem.

“It is a good thing that residents’ feedback was considered in the consultation and has resulted in a positive outcome.

“We will continue to address any critical issues.”

Regarding the knock-on effect of the restrictions, the report states: “It is recognised that this may displace parking further up Park Road.

“The properties on the east side have dropped kerbs. And so the county council will explore the possibility of requesting targeted enforcement to deter obstructive parking.”

The report by the executive director for environment, Jo Turton, rejected the idea of double-yellow lines.

Other proposals being put forward to the cabinet member for highways and transport include new disabled parking bays in Windsor Avenue, Newchurch and one in Market Street, Whitworth.
