A FILE compiled by Merseyside Police into the deaths of two men from Rossendale at a wood recycling plant has been passed to the Health and Safety Executive.

The Crown Prosecution Service has forwarded details of the deaths of Thomas Elmer, 27, and James Bibby, 25, who lost their lives at the Sonae factory, in Kirkby, last December to the HSE who will conduct their own investigation into the circumstances.

A spokesman for the HSE confirmed they were now leading the investigation, but said nothing would happen until after the inquests which are scheduled to take place later this year.

Mr Elmer and Mr Bibby, both from Waterfoot, were both working for Haslingden-based Metso at the Sonae plant when they were dragged into a silo machine, while carrying out maintenance work on a steel chain conveyor.

Rossendale MP Jake Berry has pressed for serious charges to be levied against the Portuguese company.
