Extra classrooms plan for Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School

AN East Lancashire grammar school is bidding to create extra classrooms to ensure there is no shortage of places.

Lancashire County Council is due to make a decision on funding the six classroom expansion at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School later this month.

The funding is part of a Basic Need project for post-16 education to ensure there are no shortfalls in sixth form places.

And the county council has put steps in place to fill the estimated funding shortfall for the class-rooms and the remaining projects in the grammar school’s grounds. A total of £1,670,000 has already been set aside for the scheme and the additional £1,220,000 is set to be sourced from the council’s Capital Pot and the Department of Children, Schools and Families.

It has also been revealed that a planning applic-ation is set to be submitted next month for the classrooms at the Water-foot school which will be attached to the back of the sports hall.

The school is also creating a new performing arts block at the Glen Road site.

It is set to be a two-storey block, featuring a 250-seat auditorium.

A new courtyard area will also be created between the arts centre and Clark Building there.The centre applied for would house arts, music, IT, media and performing arts classes, the county council has been told.

Headteacher Marc Morris said: “The performing arts block is a much-needed addition to the resources available to students at Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School.”
