FIRE crews were called to a 500 square-metre moorland fire near Bacup.

A fire engine from Rawtenstall and Bacup were called to the blaze at around 5pm on Sunday.

A fire service spokesman said firefighters used blowers and beaters to put the flames out.

He said: "During the last two years, we have attended 69 wildfires across Lancashire.

"The involvement of the public is a vital factor in preventing the damage wildfires can cause.

"Take extra care with the disposal of lighted cigarettes, particularly form moving vehicles or in moorland or countryside areas.

"Ensure your barbecue is fully extinguished and cold before disposing of the contents."
