A NEW community scheme has been tabled by councillors following an inquest into the death of a Ramsbottom resident.

Ramsbottom Councillors Rob Hodkinson, Ian Bevan and Ian Schofield called on the leaders of Bury Council to address the concerns of potholes in Ramsbottom and its surrounding villages at the full meeting of Bury Council on Wednesday.

This follows a recent inquest verdict into the death of Ramsbottom resident Roger Hamer last year.

Following the three-day inquest, the jury concluded that the 83-year-old probably hit a large pothole on Bury New Road, Ramsbottom, which caused him to come off his bike and cause a fatal brain injury back in March 2016.

Cllr Rob Hodkinson said: “I would first to take this opportunity to express, on behalf of Ramsbottom Councillors, our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr Hamer.

“Even at the age of 83, he was still very fit and active and enjoyed walking, climbing and being in his garden, but his ultimate passion was to cycle.

“Potholes is one of the main issues raised in Ramsbottom and a big issue throughout the borough.

“We want to get the community engaged into tackling this issue.

“Far too often, potholes and issues on the highway are reported by Councillors and residents - and nothing happens.

Weeks and months can go by without repair. This is unacceptable.

“The general public need feedback as to where the council are at with regards to potholes.”

Ramsbottom councillors have looked towards Devon County Council who have successfully established a “Community Road Warden scheme” to tackle issues.

As part of the scheme each warden is a highways “champion” for their designated area - whether one street or a few streets or village - and are responsible for reporting potholes and other issues to the council.

Cllr Ian Bevan said: “As part of the overall review and as a tribute to Roger Hamer we ask that the Cabinet Member look at the scheme adopted by Devon County Council and consider a pilot scheme here.

“It’s three Councillors are more than happy to work with the Council in that respect.”
