HUNDREDS of people turned out to ride in some spectacular scenery for the second Northern Grip festival this weekend.

The three-day mountain bike festival was held in Lee Quarry and Stubbylee Park in Bacup.

There were various riding events ranging from single track to wild riding as well as plenty for the family to do.

The sun shone as visitors were entertained by music from the likes of Mr Wilson's Second Liners while an art exhibition using hula hoops brought a splash of colour to the event.

It culminated in a performance from Stacksteads Brass Band in the centre of the quarry.

The event has been hailed as a boost for Rossendale which has invested a lot into bike trails.

Mike Kelly, one of the organisers, said: "It has been very good.

"We have had lots of great feedback.

"It has been very family orientated with lots of kids out and about on their bikes.

"We had events in Stubbylee Park as well as in the quarry along with refreshments and play activities."

Mr Kelly said there were around 400 people there - double the amount that came to the first event which was held in Ramsbottom last year.

"It is a fantastic location for bikes with properly built mountain bike trails.

"There are a lot of bike companies and exhibitors as well.

"It is about celebrating mountain biking as well as enjoying music, food and drink.

"One of the highlights has been seeing the quarry used for the bands."

He said they held lots of kids sessions for new riders with the riders showing off their skills.

"Rossendale Council is keen to encourage kids to take up cycling.

"They have put investment in this area by creating tracks and we've tried to use them this year.

"It is a big social for everybody celebrating the fun of mountain biking."

Mr Kelly added they hope to be able to hold the festival in the same venue next year.
