A 39-YEAR-OLD man was jailed for an assortment of offences after telling magistrates he was not willing to co-operate with the probation service.

John Sparks, of Sandfield Road, Bacup, pleaded guilty to attempted burglary at Red Hair and Beauty Salon, Market Street, Bacup, possession of cocaine, theft from a shop and criminal damage to a car.

He was jailed for a total of 12 weeks.

Tracey Yates, prosecuting, said the attempted burglary was caught on CCTV which showed Sparks take a metal bar out of a carrier bag and try to jemmy the window out of its frame.

"That didn't work and he then used the bar to hit the window," said Mrs Yates. "The pane was laminated and it did not break."

The criminal damage was to a car belonging to an ex-partner. They had a text message row and shortly after he turned up at her house. She saw him take a shovel and start hitting her car with it. The '03 car was written off as a result of the attack.

Nick Dearing, defending, said his client was not prepared to co-operate with the probation service and realised that limited the magistrates' sentencing options.
