A MAN was taken to hospital with pelvic and back injuries after falling from a roof as he attempted to participate in a stand-off with police.

A second man who successfully managed to climb on the roof of the property in Inkerman Street, Bacup, stayed there for eight hours.

The 34-year-old Bacup man was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and affray after he allegedly threw slates off the roof as police officers attempted to talk him down.

A police spokesman said: "Just after 6pm yesterday we attended an address in Inkerman Street, Bacup, to make an arrest.

"As officers gained entry two men made their way onto the roof of the property. One of the men has then fallen from the roof. He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital with suspected back and pelvic injuries.

"Officers continued to negotiate with the man who remained on the roof until about 2am. A 34-year-old man from Bacup was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and affray.

"Another man who was in the address was arrested on suspicion of burglary."

***John Sparks, 39, of Colshaw Road, Manchester, has been charged with burglary and was due to appear at Burnley Magistrates Court today.
