CLEVER young designers from Northern Primary School rose to the challenge of creating posters for ‘Weir Pride’.

The community group asked the years five and six pupils to design a poster encouraging people to stop dropping litter and pick up after their dog.

The school in Burnley Road is on the border between the village and the neighbouring town of Bacup.

The winning poster was designed by Grace Ford, 10, incorporating a message the ‘Weir Pride’ team had told the children at an assembly .

She said: “I remember being told that when one person drops rubbish then another will follow and so on and so on.

“I think the village is a nice clean place and I don’t want people to drop rubbish.

“I am proud that my design was picked.”

School secretary Julie Cunliffe said: “We had a really difficult decision to make as we had 49 posters and the children had put a lot of time and effort into them.

“There are some very clever and inventive children in our village.

“The standard of all the posters was very high.

“We managed to get the number down to 12 and then selected three runners up and one winner. We had a very difficult choice to make for first prize but Grace Ford’s message was superb.”
