REPAIRS to barriers on a major road are set to be carried out this evening following a number of accidents.

Highways England will be starting the work in the A56 leading up to Rising Bridge roundabout at 8pm.

The roundabout, which has undergone a multi-million pound upgrade, has been an accident hot-spot in recent months and many barriers have been damaged in the incidents which have left some people seriously injured.

Road closures will be put in place to allow for the work to happen between 8pm and 6am tomorrow morning.

These will include the A56 northbound and southbound carriageways between Grane Road and Burnley Road. Blackburn Road will also be closed.

Hyndburn and Haslingden MP Graham Jones, who has been campaigning to make the roundabout safer, said: “It is very unfortunate that many cars have crashed into the barriers.

“The roadworks at the roundabout have meant that some unfamiliar motorists have ended up leaving the highway or being involved in an accident.

“It’s unfortunate that some repair work is needed but what I will say is that I have not heard any complaints about the roundabout in the past few weeks.

"It seems the roadworks have improved it.

“So I hope the repair work will add to that and the situation will continue to improve.”

Signed diversions will be put in place during the closures.

In January a 30-year-old man lost his leg after coming off his motorbike and last year a road worker suffered leg injuries after a driver failed to stop at a road closure.

The contractor was hit by a black Ford Focus after the motorist attempted to drive through an overnight closure.

A Highways England spokesman said: “We would like to apologise for the short notice and for any inconvenience this may cause.

“We would like to assure people we are working as hard as possible to recover time whenever it is safe and practical to do so.”
