A ONE-year-old baby was injured as her family scrambled out of the way of an out-of-control car.

The youngster, Darcie Waine, suffered a bruise to her head after her aunt Barbara skidded on ice trying to get her to safety.

Moments before the baby’s mum, Hayley Waine, also felt her car skid dangerously in treacherous snow and ice.

After being checked out by medics the family returned to the car to find it had been written off after a third car ploughed into it.

Forecasters have predicted more disruption over the weekend with a yellow warning of ice in place and snow expected again today.

In Bacup, six vehicles crashed in Venture Road including one carrying a pregnant woman who was unhurt.

Mrs Waine was with her sister Barbara Morley and one-year-old Darcie when she started to lose control on the hill.

The 29-year-old managed to get her silver Lexus to the bottom of the hill before seeing another car lose control behind her.

Fearing it was going to crash into the side of the car where the child was, her sister got out but fell after slipping on the ice and Darcie hit her head.

The sisters abandoned the vehicle, putting warning triangles at the top of the hill in a bid to stop further accidents.

Mrs Waine said: “My daughter was screaming so we took her to the doctors but when we got back another car had crashed into mine. It is a write-off.

“I had lost control about halfway down the hill. It was extremely frightening. I was going sideways down the hill. The only way to stop was by turning the wheels into the kerb.”

Darcie was being monitored for concussion last night.

Mrs Waine, an administrator, said given how steep and bendy the road is, it should have been gritted.

A spokeswoman for Lancashire County Council said it was not on their list of ‘priority roads’ and there were no plans to review it.

Elsewhere the weather forced the temporary closure of Grane Road in Haslingden after an accident, and Haslingden Old Road, Blackburn while there was another crash in Burnley Road East in Waterfoot.

Other crashes were reported in Huncoat and Great Harwood. Nine schools were closed including Bacup and Rawtenstall Grammar School and Fearns Community Sports College in Stacksteads.

Bin collections were also disrupted.

with Pendle and Rossendale Councils warning their vehicles were struggling to get through.

Rossendale Council said they will deploy additional collection crews on Tuesday for those they missed on Friday.

However it wasn’t all misery as school children enjoyed snowball fights, pets played and people enjoyed stunning views over the hills.
