A PENSIONER has been taken to hospital with serious head and leg injuries after being hit by a van in the Rossendale valley.

The 69-year-old woman was hit by a white Peugeot Boxer as she crossed Pilling Street, Acre, shortly before 5.45pm on Thursday.

She suffered two broken legs, two broken ankles, a head injury and a suspected pelvis injury, police said.

She was treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital by ambulance.

Officers said no arrests have been made.

A road closure was put in place while the woman was treated and investigation work was carried out by police.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at around 5.45pm on August 11 to reports that a 69-year-old woman had been in collision with a white Peugeot Boxer van in Pilling Street, Acre.

"She was taken to hospital where she remains in a serious condition.

"It is believed she suffered two broken legs, two broken ankles, a head injury and a possible pelvis injury.

"No arrests have been made and the driver of the van did stop at the scene."

Community leaders have raised safety concerns around surrounding roads.

Worsley ward councillor Marilyn Procter said her thought were with the lady and her family.

She said: "Acre is an area of concern, especially on Blackburn Road where you're going on quite a long stretch between the traffic lights and the roundabout.

"Any accident is a worry but especially when you are talking about older people and this lady's injuries do sound very serious.

"Hopefully she will make a full recovery and my thoughts are with her family."

Any witnesses are asked to call police on 101, quoting log number 998 of August 11.
