TWO major cannabis raids have been carried out by Rossendale police.

The first raid saw 250 cannabis plants found at an address in Newchurch Road, Stacksteads, in what police have described as a ‘professional set up’ over three floors.

Forensic tests are being carried out but police say no arrests have been made.

In the second case a ‘substantial’ amount of cultivated cannabis was found at an address on Eastgate, Whitworth.

The 27-year-old male occupant has been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class B drug. He has been released on bail until November 23.

PC Katrina Scott said: “We have recovered a substantial amount of cannabis in both instances. That has now been taken off the street and disrupted the activities of those involved with manufacturing it.

“These cannabis factories don’t bring good people to the door, so I wold urge anybody who suspects that cannabis is being grown in their area to contact us and we’ll take it off the street.”

The raid in Stacksteads took place at around 10.30pm on October 8. Officers had originally been called out to reports that a window had been broken, but when they arrived they found the plants, which were located upstairs, in a loft, and in a cellar.

Following the raid a Rossendale police spokesman said on Facebook: “To whoever was growing hundreds of cannabis plants on Newchurch Road in Stacksteads, you don’t need to look after them anymore. The Neighbourhood Policing Team has taken them off your hands.

“These plants are on their way to the incinerator and the growing equipment is going to help a local charity.”

The raid in Whitworth took place at around 8am on October 13.

PC Scott said there was ‘nothing to suggest the two incidents are directly linked at the moment’.

Anyone who suspects cannabis is being grown in their area can call police via 101.
