A COMBINED literacy and geography trip to Blackpool Zoo saw senior school students from Rossendale completing a series of challenges and learning about the rainforest.

Year Seven pupils at Fearns Community Sports College in Stacksteads ventured across the county for the tropical experience.

Literacy co-ordinator Elizabeth Haworth said: "We took 41 Year 7 pupils to Blackpool Zoo for the day for a combined literacy and geography trip.

"Pupils took part in an hour long interactive rainforest education session, where they had the opportunity to hold stick insects and cockroaches."

The pupils will soon be learning more about rainforests as part of their Year Seven work.

They also got the chance to explore the Lancashire zoo to learn more about the different animals and they had a booklet to finish, based on what they saw and felt.

Fearns pupil Leon Watson, 12, said: "It was really pretty good. We had to race around the zoo to try to get all the details to complete the booklet as we had to find out information on what habitats the animals lived in. I thought 'Wolf Ridge' was really, really good."
