CALLS have been made to secure a derelict mill after another deliberate fire.

Firefighters from Bacup Fire Station were called to Albert Mill in Market Street, Whitworth at 9.05am on Thursday after rubbish at the back was set alight.

Crew manager Andy Jones said firefighters put the blaze out using a hose jet, and slammed the fire bugs.

He said: “Deliberate burning of rubbish is damaging to the environment and uses resources that may be required for a critical lifesaving incident.

“It is not the first time that our appliances have been required to deal with incidents at Albert Mill.

“Incidents of this nature will not be tolerated.”

A spokesman for the fire service said: “This follows numerous incidents at the mill and I would urge members of the public to keep out of Albert Mill.

“Yet again, youths are entering the building despite several appeals for them to stay and out of the mill .”
