THE fire service were called to a derelict mill in Rossendale after the latest in a series of deliberate fires at the site over recent years.

Two fire crews from Bacup and Rochdale attended the scene at Albert Mill in Whitworth shortly before 9pm on Saturday.

Two breathing apparatus wearers where sent into the mill to tackle the fire.

Thermal imaging cameras and a hose reel where used to bring two fires under control.

A spokesman for the fire service said: “This follows numerous incidents at the mill and I would are urge members of the public to keep out of Albert Mill as it is in a very poor state of repair and poses risks to anyone who enters.

“Yet again, youths are entering the building despite several appeals for them to stay and out of the mill.

“Basement fires are very dangerous fires for the fire service to fight. This criminal act is putting lives at risk.

“Nuisance rubbish fires tie up fire service resources when they could be needed at a house fire or road traffic collision.”

In a previous incident at the site, firefighter Chris Farrow broke his back while answering an emergency call in May 2009.
