ROSSENDALE MP Jake Berry has called for urgent action to improve safety outside a school following the council turning down his request for bollards.

Mr Berry had been working with residents and the school to resolve parking problems on the quiet cul-de-sac that forms the entrance to Waterfoot School in Wolfenden Green.

And at a site visit last year, the highways boss at Lancashire County Council agreed to look again at the problem, including looking at installing a rising bollard. But this request has been refused.

Mr Berry said: “Waterfoot Primary is an amazing building, but whoever was responsible for planning the access in and out of the school has got a lot to answer for.

“I am disappointed the council have turned down my request for bollards.

“The parking situation around the school is unacceptable and I’ve asked that the council’s discussions on this issue be given a high priority to ensure a resolution is found as soon as practically possible.

“It’s clear that no action is not an option and we must find a solution before there is an accident.”

Waterfoot councillor Karl Kempson said: “I know dozens of families who have raised this as a problem.“Lancashire Country Council must do something before a child gets hurt.”

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We have been exploring a number of options with Waterfoot Primary School to address the issues of traffic at the start and end of the school day, but rising bollards would not be a practical solution for a number of reasons.

“We are aware of the concerns of residents and would encourage parents, where possible, to consider alternatives to dropping their children by car at the gates.”
