PARENTS have been asked to warn children about the dangers of playing in derelict buildings during half-term after a fire in a boarded-up property.

Three crews from Bacup and Rawtenstall brought the blaze under control and investigators believe it was started by youths.

It happened in Tong Lane, Bacup, at around 4.40pm on Friday.

Crew manager Dave Loney said two of his firefighters risked their lives by entering the building through a window, believing there was someone inside.

He said: “Appliances from Bacup and Rawtenstall were called to the address to reports of a flat on fire with persons inside.

“Upon arrival at the property, which had boarding up on the ground floor doors and windows, it was evident that a fire was ongoing in a rear room of the ground floor.

“Two firefighters in breathing apparatus made entry through a window and extinguished the fire with a hose reel.

“They then continued to search the remainder of the flat for any persons missing. Fortunately this time no persons were in the fire property or the property above.”

Mr Loney said he believed the fire was started by youths playing within the “unoccupied and unsafe” building.

He added: “With school holidays upon us, it is important to remind children about the dangers of playing within derelict buildings and especially the dangers of fire-setting.

“Fires can quickly get out of hand and can and will cause damage or disruption to neighbouring homes and businesses.

“It is important to note that three fire engines were mobilised to this fire, leaving Rossendale with significantly less-than-normal cover. Any other incidents within the Valley would have had a delayed response and this in turn could have tragic consequences.

“If any parents or guardians have worries or fears about their children’s behaviour in relation to fires, Lancashire Fire and Rescue will support.”
