RESIDENTS will have the opportunity to gain a better understanding and awareness of dementia at a series of events to be held in Rossendale.

East Lancashire Clinical Commissioning Group (CGG), in conjunction with the Alzheimer’s Society, will be hosting weekly Dementia Friends sessions at Bacup Health Centre over the next six weeks.

The aim is to educate local people more about what it is like to live with, and care for, somebody living with dementia, and then turn this understanding into new initiatives.

Dr Tom Mackenzie, clinical lead for Rossendale, said: “For many people living with dementia in our communities getting out and about is a stressful and negative experience. These sessions help people better understand the perspective of those living with dementia, and how we can all help make day-to-day life a more positive and comfortable experience for them.”

The weekly one-hour sessions will start tomorrow, from 9.30am. Each session is limited to 18 people.
