Fines promote safer driving in city

SIR – Bus lane fines are not a cash cow (T&A opinion, December 7), fines are unfortunately necessary to deter poor driving standards.

Bus lanes are clearly marked. Would someone who failed to spot them also fail to spot a pedestrian, cyclist or even another car?

Car insurance is so expensive in Bradford because driving standards are not as good as they should be. Speeding, the use of mobile phones, erratic driving and inconsiderate parking are all too common. The majority of good drivers have to pay higher insurance because there are too many claims from the Bradford area.

How about a campaign by the T&A, ideally backed by the Council and large employers, to improve driving standards so that in five years Bradford was one of the cheapest UK places for car insurance?

This would benefit all capable motorists financially and it would also reduce collisions, deaths and injuries. Fewer crashes would mean less congestion.
