A MAN has pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving after he crashed a car and killed one of his best friends.

Ashley Fielding's change of plea came as the family of 23-year-old Ashley Connell prepared to honour the first anniversary of his death today.

The young music-lover, of Knowsley Road, Wilpshire, died from multiple injuries when he was thrown from the front seat through the window of a red Honda Civic Type R being driven by Fielding.

He had been making his way home to a 60th birthday party for his mum Christine when the crash happened.

The pair were travelling along Mellor Lane, Mellor, with three other friends when the car hit a stone wall before ploughing into a parked car on April 21 last year.

Fielding, 21, of Whalley Banks, Whalley, suffered a broken shoulder and pelvis in the horrific smash.

He was arrested after he was released from hospital and was charged in August. He was due to stand trial on May 28, after he pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driiving on January 8.

But his solicitor brought the matter back to court and a guilty plea has now been entered. Fielding will be sentenced on May 2.

Ashley's father Mike has spoken of the difficulty his family has had dealing with the events of the past 12 months.

He said: "It has been incredibly hard and I am not sure we could have done it if it hadn't been for the support we have received. It is a year on now and it has just been terrible.

"You just have to get on with life, but you can never forget. You just learn to live with the pain. If I wake up in the night Ashley is there, he is always with me.

"We were told by police that it had been brought forward and we will be there."

Ashley also left sister Hayley, 29 , and brother Lawson, 32, and girlfriend Rachel.

The family, who will be attending the sentencing, have backed the Lancashire Telegraph's Wasted Lives campaign, which is aimed at reducing the carnage caused by young drivers.

Christian Gillibrand, 21, of Ramsgreave Road, Blackburn, suffered severe internal injuries in the crash. Sam Litherland, 22, of Longsight Road, Copster Green, sustained neck, back, lung and facial injuries. Julian Hollings, 24, of Ribchester Road, Blackburn, had head injuries. All have now recovered.

They, and other friends of the former Bowland High School pupil, have continually held memorial events since Ashley's death to raise money for the North West Air ambilance - which took the survivors to hospital - and Pendelebury hospital - which treated Ashley as a child.

Ashley was born with a condition called congenital hydrenal hyperplasia and was not expected to live for more than 12 weeks.

He worked for the family company Groundworks although he was due to start his dream job in fashion in Manchester just a few days after the crash.

Ashley was well known for his love of partying and would regularly travel to clubs in Leeds for a night out.

Mr Connell said: "Ashley was really into his music and his friends are doing up Blackburn Northern club to look like one of his favourite Ibiza clubs for a memorial night next Saturday. Everyone has made a tremendous effort.

"Ashley would really have appreciated it."

Why do people continue to write nasty comments about Ashley? Everyone still having a dig want to take a look at themselves. Whats it like being perfect? Ashley is serving his time now. FOR AN ACCIDENT. So get a life and get off Ashley's back. Whoever this Wayne is, you obviously don't know Ashley so keep your unwanted comments to yourself... Your a w**ker. How people can come onto a website hurling abuse about something and someone they know little about is pathetic and shows what sad lives many people lead. Ashley has had to put up with the media slating him ever since the accident but now he is serving his time, this should all stop. It should be closure for both families. Just leave Ashley alone you t***ers.

i agree with gary , he deserves everything he gets , a lighter sentence , i hope not .

Ashley Fielding has had the worst 12 months of his life. Although the majority of the public seem to think this accidental tragedy hasn't affected him. . .
The way he has been portrayed in the media is disgusting. On various occasions, there has been false information printed. The Lancashire Evening Telegraph couldn't even get his age correct. All they have done over the last 12 months is sensationalise stories about Ashley, and use him as a scapegoat and an excuse to boost their sales. How the family of Ashley Connell have grieved so publicly is undignified, but everyone deals with things in different ways...
firstly i would like to put the record straight about Ashley showing no remorse. This is a sick comment and is absloutely untrue. Ashley will have regrets about this for the rest of his life, he just doesn't show this publicly by approaching the telegraph at every opportunity. He has been dignified about this and has dealt with it in his own way. Ashley Connell was a close friend to Ashley and not only has Ashley had to deal with losing a friend, but the consequences of the accident ahead. People cannot say Ashley isn't sorry, when they do not know him. He did not deliberately set out to hurt anyone that day. Has anyone ever stopped to think that the other passengers played a part in this accident? If it was solely Ashley's fault, the other 3 people in that car would have stood up in court to give evidence against him. Surely this tells you Ashley wasn't the only one to blame?
As for the people saying Ashley was drunk, well thats another false accusation. Ashley would have been sentenced alot higher if this was the case, and the Telegraph would have certainly made it clear that Ashley was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Ashley was not charged for being under the influence of alcohol!!!
The sentence Ashley recieved will serve no purpose at all. Ashley will not benefit from imprisonment, as it will never make the feelings he has go away, the only punishment will be losing his friend, but nobody sees this.
When Ashley comes home, he will be able to start living his life how he should, unlike he has for the past year. As far as i'm concerned, Ashley has suffered enough and it is time for him to start living. After the months Ashley has spent away, he should be allowed to live his life without anyone else saying anything else upon the matter, as he will have taken his punishment like A man, and the speculation regarding this unfortunate accident should be put to bed.

Let it be said that if anyone has been undignified in all of this it is Christian Gillibrand. He has been heard saying he thinks the compensation he will recieve from this accident will set him up for life. He was a passenger in the car that was also intoxicated with alcohol and drugs, and who indefinetely played a part in this accident. But Christian was the one who walked into court on 2nd May with the Connells. That is disgusting.

Ashley, I am so so proud of you for the way you have dealt with everything, considering, and you are a fantastic person. You were just unlucky this had to happen to you.

I love you more than anything. It will all be over soon baby...

He should have got a stiffer sentence. The paper said he tried to cover up the fact that he was even driving the car. This lad & his father have NO respect for the Connell family who are suffering. I thought Fielding was an intelligent lad, huh.... it seems like he hasn't got an ounce of remorse in him, when he gets out & I am sure he won't serve all his sentence, he can then carry on with his joyful life.

Seriously get an education pal and come back and argue when you have more sence, because your view, I believe is sick!

Put yourselves in the shoes of the people around Ash Fielding and get off your high horse, then maybe then you'll have a different opinion.

Was that to say well done son, see if you can do it again??They could have used that money for a donation to the lads( that died) family, IF only for a gesture to how sorry you really were?? debatable..

This idiot deserves all he gets for KILLING a young lad with his dangerous and reckless driving. Thank the lord no one else was killed through his stupidity, and as for him having to live with it for the rest of his life, I hope he does, along with a lenghty prison sentence.

What has happened is a tragedy for all concerned but sending a young man to prison is very sad as at the end of the day it was an accident as was he not just giving these lads a lift home, ashley will have to live with the death of his friend for a very long time. What I find hard to understand is why some people are
given prison sentances for death by dangerous driving and others are given community service. I hope all works out well for ashley fielding as I have met him recently and have found him to be a very mature and pleasant young man.

They drove around the area like nutters around the area. The next generation will do the same. Should the lads be spending there money on a deposit on a house or flat and moving out of home? Then there money will be spent on there mortgage and not on there cars.

I see your point Mark, but I think you've missed mine.

What I'm saying is that hasn't he suffered enough???

Do you not agree that the mental torture he's going thru is enough?

I'm sure you'd be seeing it a different way if it was your friend, colleague, neighbour or relation going through this.

Surely we should be supporting him! Ash Fielding is a great lad, and surely we should be backing and supporting a true Blackburn son! We all make mistakes, and prey that he comes out the other side of this stronger. Best of luck Ash!
Would you still be saying this if he had done this to someone he did'nt know? say if he had hit a young child crossing a road? he may be a 'great' lad but his stupidity has cost a young man his life, too many drivers think they are invincible until something like this happens.

A tragic waste of life, god bless Ashley and his family. Everyday I see young lads putting their foot down in their cars whether it be in town or out in the country and it just takes that split second for something to go wrong, look a the devastation it has caused to all these families, Ashley's family and also the boys who survived. People still don't take heed when these accidents happen.

Lindsey, Blackburn says...

Don't think any punishment could be worse that what he has got to live with. He never intended it to happen and through a moment of stupidity he's shattered some many lives including his own.
