WITNESSES have been asked to help police discover what caused a fatal head-on smash on the A59.

Sameer Vohra, 34, of Blackburn, died when his silver BMW car collided with a Daf HGV on the A59, Samlesbury, just before 1.30pm yesterday.

The female passenger of the BMW was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital with serious but non life threatening injuries.

A Peugeot people carrier ran in to the back of the car and three people were treated for minor injuries.

In the wake of the tragedy, BAE Systems revealed there were plans to install a mini roundabout at the junction of the A59 and Myerscough Smithy Road - very close to where Mr Vohra died.

The roundabout, which may have prevented the accident, was agreed when BAE granted planning approval for its aerospace park last year.

Sergeant David Tonge, who is leading the investigation, said: "I would like to appeal to anybody who may have seen the collision, or any of the vehicles in the moments before, to contact police.

Any amount of information may help us to find out exactly what happened."

Malcolm Adams, of BAE Systems, said it was a dreadful accident and numerous workers had heard the bang made by the impact of the vehicles.

He said: "A mini-roundabout and cycle lane will be installed along that stretch of road.

"The new entrance we are building further up the road will offer safer entry and exit which is a major issue for us."

Chris Holtom, county councillor for the Samlesbury area, said the accident was confirmation of his worst fears regarding the stretch of road.

He added: "From the Trafalgar junction to the Mellor Brook roundabout this is one of the most dangerous roads in Lancashire.

"This death shows the real threat this road can have.

"There are major safety concerns on this stretch and I am working very closely with BAE to make sure any alterations are done properly.

"I don't think people realise how dangerous that road is.

"I use it regularly and often I seem to be the only one driving at a sensible speed."

A worker at the Boddington Arms pub, near to the scene, said she had struggled to get in to work following the smash.

She said: "I came down Cuerdale Lane and it was all blocked off.

"And when I got to Mellor Brook I had to tell them I worked down here, for them to let me through.

Anyone with information is asked to ring Lancashire Police on 08451 253545.

There are no unsafe roads!! just unsafe drivers who cant or wont obey the law. its a shame in some ways this driver isnt around to see the carnage he has caused in other peoples lifes due to his actions
I arrived at the scene shortly after the accident. Believe me the shock and devastation on the faces of the other people involved will stay with me always! A few minuites earlier and it could have been me and my mother the BMW crashed into not a big lorry that could take the collision without another death! The passenger is VERY lucky to be alive!! Maybe her God was watching over her!Hope she is making a good recovery!! Best wishes to all who were involved, hope you can all recover from the trauma. My prayers are with you all X The emergency services were superb!!
thank you for your concern, i am still in hospital although im learning to get around in my wheelchair, everyone keeps telling me that i am lucky to be alive. personally i think its tragic that i lost him, we had so many things planned. my health is gettin better each day i pray the same with strength to sameers family, especially his mum, who he told me so many things about,a fantastic woman that raised a fantastic wonderful man. may allah protect you sameer, i was the last person to be near you, to kiss you, to hold you.to listen to the things you said, and have faith that the thing you asked me to do will be done, i love you sameer and i miss you more than i would my own life. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Commendable that Bae is looking at re disigning its entrance/exit with a roundabout especially when this accident happened no where near their premises gates.
How can the telegraph say that a roundabout "may have prevented the accident" when the car was (apparently) on the wrong side of the road (and double white lines) no where near the proposed roundabout site/Bae entrance? LET perhaps one of your reporters could pop down and have a look at the scene before writing such things.
There is no such thing as a dangerous road it is merely dangerous drivers that make a road notorious.
I hope the innocent parties make a full recovery.

I work out of Bae Samlesbury and on many occasions some cretin crosses the double white lines and nearly causes a head on collision.I have a family that I cherish very much and I like to think that I will get home to them after my daily commute, without my life being cut short by some reckless individual. Driving too fast or breaking overtaking law does not make you a bigger man, or more attractive to the opposite sex, it makes you a looser. I have every sympathy for the dead mans family and he would be with them now if he had been more careful.

If the police in Blackburn are listening, let's have a clamp down on bad drivers. Instead of sitting in your new building at Whitebirk, get out more and make our streets safer. Let's start with mobile phone users and uninsured/dangerous vehicles. If I had the powers of arrest I could bag you eight of these every morning whilst I travel along Preston new road.

This incident is being either glorified or demonised.

The simple facts are that a man (irrespective of ethnic origin) drove a high powered car on the wrong side of the road and killed himself, whilst injuring others.

He (and his family) deserve our sympathy, a man has died, others have been injured, and yet here everybody is trying to imply reasoning for the accident.

the man who died didn't set out to kill himself (or anyone else) on the day in question, there was an accident and a man died. There will be an inquest in due course, at which point those in possession of the full facts related to the matter will conclude upon a cause of death.

The folks on here who are taking exception to other's opinions should learn to rise above such basic interpretations of a tragic incident.

Put simply, you weren't there - you saw noting - so say noting until you possess the facts and evidence from which to spout your ramblings.

At a time like this, those that hold their tongues keep the best counsel.

It seems that Sameer was driving on the wrong side of the road overtaking. I have seen many many drivers overtaking at high speeds in their high performance cars on that stretch of road. The road is dangerous and it maybe haunted but surely all drivers should exercise great caution whlst driving on that road and should never overtake at high speeds.

Recklessness kills. Sameers BMW drove into the wrong side of the road directly into the lorry according to the accident and police people. I find it extremely appalling that theres many people actually questioning the driving and safety of the lorry driver. The lorry driver is not to blame.

May Allah give sameer jannat-ul Firdaus and bless his kabr with noor..ameen

I completely agree with u, also for those of u who know all the other fatalities, everyday when i drive on this road i take extra special care BECAUSE i know that there have been so many casualties on this road, and i for one would not take an unneccessary risk. What was meant to happen has happened there is no point debating about who is to blame, at the end of the day, my duaas are with him and the family. Also I will be remembering the Lorry Driver and all the other passengers that survived the crash. They were victims of wrong place wrong time, and will be affected by this horrific crash.

I would like to say to those of you who new Sameer, that the best action for yourselves and Sameer would be to try to remember that a time wil come for each of us to taste death whether Muslim or non muslim. No-one who has come into this world has escaped it. So inshallah let us all take lesson from this that death can come at anytime and anywhere. May Allah SWT gave us all the tawfeeq to prepare for it. Also that if we make a change for the good from this moment on and be it due to the death of Sameer, then inshallah Sameer will benefit too with the reward.
For those of us who find it difficult try to do a little good but do it often as this will show steadfastness .
Let us alll try to mimic our 24 hour life according to what Allah wants us to live it and to do this we need to follow the ways shown by our beloved Prophet Muhammed SAW.

Also Brother Sameer was a neighbour of mine for the nearly 20 years of my life. He had a a glowing smile and open arms for those who needed help. He gave you confidence in yourself when you needed it and would always be there till the end. I know many people he helped to the best of his ability and did not lose hope in them when others did. I pray Allah SWT rewards Sameer in the same way ; Ameen .

Finally a point to note; Allah does to look at the quantity of your good deeds, it is their quality . How much sincerity you had in your intention is how they will be weighed on the Day of Resurrection .
Most important of all do not find faults in others; look at those better than you and try to be like them . Who are we to judge when we are to be judged by Allah SWT!!!

Do Shukr of what has been decreed for you and have Sabr at times of difficulties. If you per chance do a bad deed then follow it with a GOOD DEED as this inshallah will cancel out the bad one.

May Allah SWT shower his Mercy on Sameer and all the marhumeen, make their kabr that of a garden in jannah; give his mother and father sabr-jameel, and also to his to both his brothers and his sister; his wife and children and to his relatives and friends. Ameen

Please guys can we learn from this and in return for every person who realises what has happened and why it happened then in return Sameer will gain the reward and finally the good deeds he now needs. So do this one thing as some brothers have mentioned. Repent, live a life of good deeds and dont hurt people. Engage in HALAL earnings and show we Muslims are the best example. It's easy to make easy cash but life is too short and we need to prepare for hereafter. Maybe my little advise will also give me the reward and help me live a peaceful halal life. Love you all and ask for prayers for the deceased.

Infact i dont think looking at the picture he was on the wrong side before the accident.

That picture only shows where the Peugeot came to rest.

The most important vehicle in this accident is the HGV. A lot can be deciphered from the Tachograph (and it doesn't mean the HGV was speeding) including the speed of the HGV at the precise point of impact, and the possible intensity of the impact. The HGV witness (the Tacho) will be under intense analysis for any infringements. The Tacho doesn't lie.

Preliminary reports state the BMW was on the wrong side of the carriageway and collided with the HGV travelling in the opposite direction and at a place where double solid white lines are clearly in place on a bend.

The Peugeot is reported to have collided with the rear of the BMW.

Any CCTV and eyewitness' will provide evidence as to the position of the cars and the HGV on any cameras in the area. Also, any witness' that viewed the manner of driving of all the drivers minutes before the incident. This is called Third Party Perception.

On the reports so far, it appears the BMW driver failed to see the oncoming HGV (due to the height of the Peugeot at the rear) and has commenced an overtake of the Peugeot. On doing so, the driver of the BMW has seen the HGV approaching and continued with the overtaking manoeuvre. Possibly with an increase in acceleration. The Peugeot driver may have not seen the BMW overtaking, due to being over the right shoulder, and presumably has no reason to expect an overtaking manoeuvre given double solid white lines.

In the vital milliseconds before impact, it could possibly be that the awareness of the Peugeot and the HGV drivers that saved this from being more than one fatality.

It is highly probable that as the BMW collided with the HGV it was the rear of the BMW that swung into the path of the Peugeot. In all probability, the Peugeot driver had braked to allow the BMW to rejoin the carriageway. The BMW driver likely did not know that the space and the small amount time was there to enable him to conclude a very dangerous and close encounter.

All of the above excludes any possible mechanical defects with the vehicles involved. The BMW in particular.

Just as all fatalities, there are persons whom are left behind. Take time to think about those persons, particularly at a time when a death was so unexpected. In this case, a road death.
