A MAN has died following a head-on car smash.

Two vehicles, a Ford Ranger pick-up and a Ford Mondeo, crashed into each other on the A59 near the Ribchester turn off, just after the Oaks Bar traffic lights.

The man, who is believed to be aged 50, was taken by ambulance to Royal Blackburn Hospital, where he died soon after.

The other female driver, also in her 50s, was lifted to Royal Preston Hospital by air ambulance.

Her injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Police closed a section of the road shortly after the accident at 5.10pm today, for three-and-a-half hours whilst an investigation was carried out and vehicles cleared from the road.

The road was closed from the traffic lights to Showley Road, and traffic diverted.

It just hits home how dangerous driving can be. It was quite a bad bend where they crashed into each other. My thoughts are with both famillies. Nd i hope the lady gets better soon!!

asif khan - You are wrong. The A59 starts at the centre of Liverpool. It doesn't meet Preston New Road but goes through Mellor towards Clitheroe and ends in Yorkshire.

I thought the A59 started on Preston New Road and ended in Preston?
Looking at the recent accidents its the stretch towards Preston in where the fatal accidents have happened.

The A59 from Samlesbury goes from 60 to 40 to 60 to 40 to 60 upto petre arms roundabout going towards clitheroe is 60 (that's what my driving instructor told me)the dual carriageway between bramley meade roundabout and barrow round about (the one after somerfield) is a 70 as it has a central reservation. It is impossible to reach 70 on that stretch because of the 3 roundabouts. Hope the lady makes a full recovery.

Very sad. Our thoughts are with those left behind... This incident took place in dry conditions on a section of the A59 which has a 40mph limit but which has been safely negotiated by thousands of motorists for many years when it was still a 60mph limit. It is not speed that kills, it is obstructions like tractors and chicanes or distractions like misbehaving children that kill.

R.I.P TO THE DEAD...tractor drivers have no consideration for any1,why cant they help you overtake, example by driving nearer kirB,OR waving you on when its clear

My sympathy to all involved in the accident. Yes this road can de danerous if used incorrectly, as can any road. What people tend to forget is that the M65 was built to by pass the A59 but few people use the motorway.
One of the problems with the A59 is the changes in the speed limit from 30 mph to 70mph within a few miles the other relating to a particular part of the road, is drivers overtaking on a single carrage road at the top of Pendle Road near Clitheroe which is not helped by drivers pulling in to the left when turning down Pendle Road

Sad about this. Was on this road yesterday in traffic behind atractor. Between Copster Green and Langho frustration set in for some drivers. Some of the overtaking was risky. Just to gain a couple of seconds. Slow down and chill out.

Are you aware of how long the A59 goes on for? It's not a tiny stretch of road.

My thoughts are with the family of this man. Hope the lady gets better soon
