Farmer's warning over illegal slaughter

A FARMER has been appro-ached by "barbaric" men asking to buy and illegally slaughter lambs on his land as part of Eid celebrations.

Alan Davies, 58, of Pinfold Farm, Ribchester, alerted health officers after men came knocking at his door on two separate occasions.

Environmental health chiefs across East Lancashire have since sent out hundreds of letters to farms asking for people to remain vigilant and launched an operation aimed at cracking down on the "inhumane practice."

The slaughter of animals has always been part of Eid celebrations but there is an increasing trend for people to want to carry out the slaughter themselves rather than leave it to an expert.

Mr Davies, who has a sign outside his Preston Road farm saying "Lambs For Sale" said he was disgusted when he was approached by the men.

He said: "Two Asian men and a woman pulled up in a black cab and asked my wife Anne about the lambs for sale.

"They said they wanted between 30 to 40 lambs that they could slaughter on our land. We don't kill our own lambs and Anne told them it was against the law.

"On Sunday at 4pm two different Asian men came to the door saying they wanted live lambs to slaughter. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I was gobsmacked because it's just so barbaric.

"We all have different cultures but what I don't understand is why there are people out there who will do this when there are plenty of properly trained halal slaughtermen out there who can do it following the correct procedures."

Eamonn Roberts, a senior environmental health officer for Ribble Valley Council, said: "Trained slaughtermen use very sharp knives but in the cases where it is being done illegally we have no way of knowing how the animals are being killed.

"They could be using blunt knives causing distress to the animals. There are also issues surrounding the disposal of the remains.

"There are various organs from the lambs that, if they are not disposed of properly, can lead to disease.

"Any meat produced in this way would not be certified fit for human consumption, which could cause health problems, and it does not meet any religious requirements."

Lancashire Council of Mosques chairman Hamid Quershi condemned the illegal slaughters and said letters would be issued in mosques warning people.

Animals must only be slaughtered on licensed premises and must be checked by a vet beforehand.

i am ashamed to be a muslim when i hear such things, are we medieval? the english have been very tolerant to our culture so far, but if the truth be told, they would be happy to deport or kill us all, salaam........let us go somewhere where we are welcome ?

this just isn't an 'asian' issue. The Jewish faith also kill their animals using the same method. So why make it an asian issue. In any case many restaurants around Blackburn sell HALAL meat in their meals as this allows Muslims to still eat out and follow their faith. I do not agree with the method of slaughter but the law allows it. As for the farmer who would just want to buy lambs off the side of the road at this time of year. Even in Spring it would be unusual. I feel the farmer knew exactly what he was doing and then got cold feet and tried to cover his tracks.

So what?
I love pork but not enough to want to decapitate a pig myself,as I am not a 'professional' slaughterman, but I suppose in the Asian community, everyone is an 'expert' as far as that sort of thing goes.Surprised you aren't dishing out 'educational' DVD's on how to kill something in the messiest, most painful way possible to the under 5's...

I do not think that your health is being called into question with this article, sal.
The main bone of contention is that there are people unskilled in the process of slaughter and could be using inferior equipment, thus causing the poor animal needless suffering.
I don't know if this sits right with you,but I cannot see anything acceptable about this, when there are trained Halal butchers ready and willing to carry out allegedly humane slaughter for them, and there is absolutely nothing 'Draconian' about this, unless the person carrying out a botched slaughter is doing it for kicks and imagines that it his god-given right to do so...

Sal it's not about dying from eating the meat etc.If you live somwhere where you are isolated and you cannot get meat easily then fair enough people will slaughter they own meat but here there is no need as halal meat is easily available.I think these farmers need to take the sign down if they dont want anymore knocks on the doors.

A point I was going to make but you beat me to it,nz!
I think what we should be doing here is monitoring the unscrupulous farmers trying to turn over a quick quid who are willing to sell the lambs in the first place.

Good point,Bobby Ali,and it could be said that the conditions that some of our animals in the UK have to endure before and during slaughter, gives us no real reason to pat ourselves on the back.
I can hold a modicum of moral high ground with regards to this,as after visiting a particularly nasty slaughterhouse first hand,I immediately became vegetarian due to the pain and suffering I witness there.

So you consider me a racist if I find your archaic and barbaric methods of slaughter unacceptable?
If you dislike the obvious reaction that you are going to get for the uncontrolled mass-slaughter you Muslims gleefully carry out for your 'religious festivals',why not pop over to your country of origin and celebrate them there,as then there will be no comments made against you whatsoever, and you can all wallow in your gratuitous blood-letting 'celebrations' before popping back on the plane back to Britain...

Adamsky you raise another important and misguided issue. Im not sure which source you used to quote the 25% asian population, but in actual fact the figures in east lancashire are as follows:
WHITE: 87%
ASIAN (indian/pakistani/ba
ngladeshi/others): 11%
OTHER(black/chinese/
others): 2%

and yes this includes nelson!

Asians make up a quarter or so of the local population. It stands to reason therefore that a quarter of the stories in the LET will be about Asians. What are they supposed to do - never write a story about an Asian for fear that a racist will post a comment about it?

'J' your a misguided JOKER, how can you say in the name of religion when the mosque has condemned it as illegal.

Farmers should say no, and these people will go back home and buy the meat from the shops like the rest of us.
Hardly a breaking news story.
