A FORMER leader of Ribble Valley Council has taken up his new role as the mayor for the next 12 months.

Coun John Hill has represented Read and Simonstone for the past nine years.

Cardiff-born John was scrum-half at Clitheroe Rugby Club in the 1980s and was a main player in the construction of the club's former pavilion.

During his leadership of the council, which came to an end at last year's local elections, he launched a grand tour of parish councils and community groups in a battle bus in a bid to take local government back to the people.

He takes over from Coun Doreen Taylor, Clayton-le-Dale.

At the event it was announced chief executive David Morris would be retiring next April. Council leader Coun Michael Ranson thanked him for his hard work.
