A drink driver who smashed into three cars near the notorious accident blackspot the Devil's Elbow at Read has been spared jail.

Engineer Stephen Traynor, 56, had written off an £18,000 Lexus and hit two other vehicles after overtaking against double white lines on Whalley Road, last November.

The defendant, whose actions were descibed by witnesses as senseless, irresponsible and the worst driving they had seen, was later found to be almost twice the limit, Burnley Crown Court heard.

Traynor, whose 'victims' escaped with minor injuries, had been committed for sentence by the town's magistrates who had said their powers of punishment were not sufficient.

But a judge let him walk free after telling him he had no previous convictions and if he was sent to custody it would be a drain on the taxpayer and he would lose his job.

Recorder Anthony Cross, QC, said when he had first read the papers in the case he had thought it was a dreadful piece of driving. He told Traynor :"If you read about this case in the local newspaper, not involving you, you would feel the person who committed these offences deserved to go to jail because that person put at risk the lives of a number of people."

The defendant, of Lower Laithe Cottages, Barrowford, admitted dangerous driving and drink driving. He was given 40 hours unpaid work, was banned for 12 months and must take a mandatory retest. He was ordered to pay £175 costs.

So a slap on the wrist then for what could have been a fatal incident for someone. If it had been a 20 year old in a Fiesta what's the betting he would have been jailed?

When will the courts ever get it right? If someone is arrested carrying a knife, whether sober or not, they would probably, and rightly, be arrested and punished, whether they used it or not (I'm not defending the carrying of knives before I get shouted at - it's just an analogy!). Why is driving a car (an even more lethal weapon) whilst drunk any less irresponsible or dangerous? Or is it that judges empathise more with drunk drivers, but not knife carrying thugs??

so what if the scumbag lost his job?he should have thought about that before putting other peoples lives at risk.
it's time thses judges started living in teh real world and started passing appropriate sentences.

What is the court system coming to when idiots like this walk free for a mere 40 hour’s community service (which in my experience through doing work with probation service will probably be flouted – but that’s a different story) and a 12 months ban?

So what if he lost his job through going to jail - I suspect most people would as well! I know I would for one.

How do we know an idiot like this will obey the 12 months ban? All it takes is another drink or two and he’ll think he’s invincible. How many times have we all read about drivers who have been caught for driving whilst disqualified? That’s assuming of course he does get caught!

looks like drink driving is ok to do, cause if you get caught you only get a tickle on your wrist.

Aww what a shame he could have lost his job! The selfish, arrogant, disrespectful idiot should have lost his job anyway and been banged up in a cell papered with pictures of accident scenes caused by drink drivers like him. How does he sleep at night?

He was at twice the legal limit and clearly this had a huge effect on his driving.

I don't think he is a danger to society, simply to the roads of Britain. I think, seeing as nobody as actually hurt, he should be spared jail, but his driving ban should be permanent...

why emphasise in your story that it was an 18,000 pounds lexus,so the popped up failure can,t afford a proper car,big deal!!!!

It's very interesting to see the comments made to this case. My wife was driving the '£18,000 Lexus' which was written off. Fortunately it was only the car that suffered and my wife was lucky to escape with minor injuries. It could have been so much worse in a less sturdy vehicle. We did not want to see this driver go to jail but we are surprised at the low level of sentence. When it comes down to it drinking and driving kills. In this case we and for that matter, he, were lucky. Cars don't matter but lives do!
For 'rev, clitheroe' benefit the car the accused was driving was a MG Rover 200 and believe me he was very lucky to get out of the wreck alive!
