A MAN has relived the horrific moment when the taxi he was travelling in with friends hit a stone wall in icy conditions.

Barman Grant Townsend, 20, suffered broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder as he attempted to protect his girlfriend Stephanie Dewhurst, 16, from the impact of the crash.

Their friends, Andrew Porosa, 23, and his partner Michaela Clitheroe, 18, were also in the taxi, which was ordered from Central Taxis in Accrington.

They suffered minor injuries.

Police said that the accident, near the Windmill pub in Mellor Brook at the weekend, saw the car spin off the road in wintry conditions.

They have now begun an invest-igation into how the taxi was driven, although no arrests have yet been made.

A police spokesman said the car, a Ford Galaxy which has three rows of seats, snapped a telegraph pole as it left the road while driving from Preston towards Blackburn.

The Galaxy then ploughed through a stone gatepost and wall before going through two fences.

The pals are now recovering from their injuries and all have undergone some hospital treatment. Grant, of Whalley Road, Clayton-le-Moors, said it was a miracle that no-one was more seriously hurt.

The group had been celebrating a friend's birthday in Preston before heading back to the Accrington area at around 2.30am on Saturday. Grant said: "The weather was really bad, it was snowing and we felt the conditions were dangerous."

He said the driver appeared to lose control as they came past the Windmill.

"It was a terrifying experience.

"The girls were screaming because we could see the car was headed straight at the stone wall.

"I threw myself over Stephanie. We tried to lay low and then we felt the impact." Grant is currently off work from his job as a barman at Bailey's in Church Street, Accrington.

He added: "After the accident I think I just got by on adrenaline. I just wanted to make sure that everyone else was okay. It was only later that the pain really kicked in."

Grant was treated at Royal Blackburn Hospital for his shoulder and rib injuries.

He also suffered knee and neck injuries.

Stephanie, of Ribbleton Drive, Accrington, a beauty worker at the Treatment Room in Railway Terrace, Blackburn, suffered whiplash and cuts and bruises.

Andrew suffered injuries to his arms and Michaela, who lives with Andrew in Lindadale Avenue, Accrington, hurt her neck and back.

Mohammed Ishaq, who runs Central Taxis, which provided the taxi, said: "I am very sorry that they were hurt and I wish them a very speedy recovery.

"My driver was injured in the crash as well but I have been assured that it was caused by the bad weather conditions and he was not driving recklessly."

a friends birthday in preston... a night out roudn town at 16... oh deary me, notice she isnt picture for fear of noting getting into places in preston again for the next two years, anyway thats not the point. Taxi Drivers no matter what company are lethal, am suprised more crashes dont happen. I often use one of the many Private Taxi that loiter on the streets of blackburn. i often question the fact that i may not be insured in there 'capabale' hands. Perhaps Taxi drivers should be proffesinoal drivers and not just do a 9-5 job during the day and work till silly oclock in the mornig driving a taxi.

Get your mate to sit the test buy an insurance certificate in the pub and off you go. To be fair the weather may have something to do with this mishap.

Hope those injured get well soon.

I booked a private hire taxi recently. A knackered old car turned up with visible accident damage to the side. I got in to discover the passenger air bag had released and had been forcibly pushed back into the dashboard.

I should have told him where to go but was in a hurry to catch a train so took the cab anyway. Stupid of me I know.

The driver then spoke on his mobile phone for the entire journey. Did he have a handsfree kit? What do you think?

Don't get me on the subject of some of those filthy black cabs either! Wipe your feet on the way out!

The public are encouraged to take official taxis rather than drink drive, take illegal cabs etc. Fair enough, but travelling in a 15 year old Proton with a suspect MOT, a slow puncture or two and a driver that believes 30mph speed limit really means 50mph minimum must surely increase your risk of an accident?

One taxi driver told me the police turn a blind eye to their late night antics as they just want the drunks out of town and home. Remember that when you are next being tailgated by a taxi, because you refuse to drive at twice the speed limit!

I fully agree about their appalling but the question is how many of these taxi drivers actually have 'legal' driving licenses anyway?

I dread driving around town on Friday and Saturday evenings as the streets are over-run by taxis driving like maniacs. Speed limits, lane markings and parking restrictions seem not to apply. Isn't it time you had to take a new driving test before being allowed to carry passengers. At present the joke in our house is that taxi drivers have to take a special driving test and only get a taxi licence if they fail it!

It won't need much of an investigation as to how this accident happedned. ALL taxi drivers ignore speed limits, red lights if they can, have no respect for other road users, have probably never heard of the highway code, and there should be a nationwide clamp down on them.
