POLICE hit out over the "reckless and irresponsible" driving of Ashley Fielding after he was jailed for killing his friend in a high-speed crash.

Detective Inspector Andy Hulme said the death of Ashley Connell was a "dreadful waste of a young man's life".

And he called for young motorists to stop driving dangerously - and for people to back the Lancashire Telegraph's Wasted Lives Campaign.

Fielding, 21, of Whalley Banks, Whalley, was sentenced to three years.

The family of victim Ashley Connell, 23, of Knowsley Road, Wilpshire, also welcomed the sentence and said they hoped it would make other young drivers think carefully before they got behind the wheel.

Front seat passenger Ashley was killed after being thrown from the Honda Civic Type R when Fielding lost control of the car on April 21 last year.

The court heard how Fielding was travelling at a speed of up to 86mph along Mellor Lane, Mellor, when he went over the brow of a hill and was forced to slam on his brakes to avoid hitting an oncoming car. The road has a speed limit of 60mph.

The red Honda clipped a kerb before ricocheting into two stone walls before ploughing into a Volvo parked at the side of the road near the Spread Eagle pub.

Music lover Ashley Connell, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died at the scene from severe head, chest and abdominal injuries.

After the case Det Insp Hulme said: "This was not an accident but was the result of reckless and irresponsible driving.

"It was a dreadful waste of a young man's life and should send a strong message about the devastating impact of driving dangerously.

"In 2007, 21 per cent of all injury accidents in Eastern Division involved young people, aged between 17 and 24 and we continue to work with agencies such as the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety to raise awareness and to educate drivers about the consequences of careless and reckless driving.

"It is important to remember that not all young drivers are irresponsible but education is essential and we fully support the Lancashire Telegraph's Wasted lives campaign in their efforts to reduce the number of fatalities and injuries caused by young drivers."

In a statement, the Connell family said: "We are pleased with the sentence.

"We have been overwhelmed by the help we have received from Ashley's friends and we would like to thank the police, in particular family liaison officers for their support during this difficult time.

"We urge young people to drive responsibly and hopefully this will act as an important reminder of the dreadful consequences we have had to suffer."

Mick Connell, Ashley's father, said in a statement read to court: "I don't think we can express the loss of our wonderful son Ashley. Our lives have changed forever, my family life was lived to the full and I enjoyed every moment. Now all we do is exist."

Burnley Crown Court was told that the other passengers sustained appalling injuries in the smash.

Christian Gillibrand, 20, of Ramsgreave Road, Blackburn, suffered massive internal injuries as a result of the impact and was critically ill in the intensive care unit of the Royal Blackburn Hospital.

Julian Hollings, 23, of Ribchester Road, Blackburn, suffered head and lung injuries.

Sam Litherland, 21, of Longsight Road, Copster Green, sustained neck, back, lung and facial injuries and was on life support for three days Fielding suffered a broken shoulder and pelvis in the crash.

He was arrested after he left hospital. He pleaded not guilty to dangerous driving in January on the advice of his counsel, but changed it to a guilty plea in March, admitting driving at a gross excessive speed. As well as the jail terms, he was banned from driving for four years.

Prosecutor Timothy Brennand told the court the young men had been drinking in several pubs on the day of the accident - although Fielding had stuck to shandy.

The group had been rowdy, but the atmosphere was "happy and convivial".

The crash caused the group of friends to feel torn about their loyalties to both Fielding and Ashley Connell, the court heard.

Mr Brennand said that the Connell family had had a difficult time because of the actions of the defendant and his family.

He said: "If there had been some remorse shown it would have made their severe grief much easier to accept. They have described their lives as a living nightmare."

Defending Fielding, Mark Stuart, said that he had been wracked with guilt and remorse that it was his driving that led to the death of a friend.

Passing sentence, Judge Andrew Woolman said: "It is wrong to say that this moment was an error of judgement because it was not a short period of bad driving."

I too knew some of the lads involved in this accident having played football with them for several year s in Wilpshire and going to school in the area. I think it is unfair to slate these guys if you don't know them and I remember when I first heard of this news I was deeply saddened. As a young man myself and a driver I feel we are unfairly targeted in the UK by every section of society. I feel the sentence is just because no matter what a top lad Ashley is, that doesn't excuse him from reckless driving and a lot of people, myself included drive stupidly against our better judgement. It doesn't mean we are bad people. It just means that sometimes we make bad choices and everyone involved will be living with that for the rest of their lives. It is a shame that Ashley Connell made a bad choice that cost him his life. Doesn't make him a bad person, he just made the wrong choice at the wrong time. Unfortunately that is the way life is and I wish that people would stop slating these guys. My heart is with everyone involved who I hope are all doing well after the accident and all the best to Ashley who deserves a clean break after his prison term.

what a bunch of tossers that have wrote comments on here, im quite close to the family and can see what they have and are going through. i cant believe some of these comments on this site its disgusting, i just hope that this kind of situation happens in your life then you may realise the pain the family are going through. ashley fielding is a decent lad and would do anything for anyone. the end of the day it was an accident, yes it was a huge tradgedy and i am not trying to cover that up but i think that ashley has become a hate figure amongst the press and quite a proportion of society. ashley was used as an example, you know as well as me that in time near or far a similar accident will occur and yet he will not get a slice of the sentance ashley recieved. when ashleys gets out he will have a clear concience and no one, absolutely no body can say anything to him, he will of done his time and should be able to get on with things. you have to see the accident from both sides, ashley has been slated and undermined, as i said before a public hate figure, he will have to live with this for the rest of his life. some of you who have wrote comments slagging ashley off are out of order and use language that is un called for, ive known ashley for quite along time now and know that he is a top lad, and when he comes out to a clear conscience nobody can say jack sh*t about him. at the end of the day he has lost a close friend and will live with the tragic memories for the rest of his life.

Can everyone stop for a second and think during their teens how many times did they drive in cars with gangs driving fast with little thought to any serious consequences.
What's really sad about what i have read is that one young man as lost his life, leaving a family devastated.Another young man who must be carrying a terrible guilt is now in prison no doubt leaving another mother devastated and one must ask what will it all achieve?Ease the pain of his family i doubt that very much, placate the public, its a 7 day wonder for most, let the police of the hook that they are tackling the problem , its a drop in a very large ocean.
What a sad situation for all and i hope both families are allowed to find some peace and move on with their lives.
I watched this on Granada reports and how ironic during the report a car went flying past the reporter at the scene of this tragic event.
What totally sickened me was the Detecive in the report appearing to almost gloat at the fact that a 21 year old was going to prison because his best friend was killed in a terrible accident. What i don't think anyone can forget this man didn't ever intend to hurt his friend and i am sure would only wish he hadn't.

Having known Ashley Fielding for some considerable time,I would like to add that he will spending his time in prison remembering every fatal part of that day,and wishing that he could have done something to avert this tragedy.Ashley is a good person and made a mistake,he never planned it.So for all of you out there judging someone you dont even know,Shut up.Lets just hope it never happens to you.And do you honestly think that Ashley Connell would like all the slagging that is going off.FOR GODS SAKE THEY WHERE BEST MATES,NOT ENEMIES.So lets put an end to the snide remarks and let Ashley rest in piece and Ashley do his time, cause his time dont end when he gets out,his time is for the rest of his life, and belive me he would gladly swap it.

What has happened is a tragic accident with the worst possible outcome. It is a tragedy that a young man has died and another who lost a close friend has ended up in prison for it. as has already been said many times, all people involved had a role to play. all drivers have a responsibility to drive carefully to ensure safety for themselves and others. however, all passengers have a responsibility to wear a seatbelt...from a young age it is drummed into us again and again the difference wearing a seatbelt can make, yet it seems that many people (who are quick to criticise the driver only) have failed to take this into consideration or simply dismiss it. the fact is if a number of things had been different that day the outcome may have been different. "lots of people dont wear seatbelts and yes they are taking risks" mc blackburn says and rightfully so - yet let's not forget that many people drive dangerously at times and yes they are taking risks. it is something that many of us have done, if at least only once (whether we like to admit it or not).
the accident that occured was due to many split second decisions - decisions that ashley fielding will be playing over in his head again and again for the rest of his life. a spell in prison will not benefit anyone, and it is hard to see how 'justice' has been served to someone who will be feeling more remorse than anyone. many of the people reading the articles and leaving comments blatantly know hardly anything about the situation and are simply jumping to conclusions. everybody that day had a role to play,it is simply neither fair or just to hold ashley fielding 100% responsible. some of the comments i have read are disgusting with regard to how people wish e.g. it had been the other way round. the people writing those things are worse than the person they like to imagine ashley fielding is. he did not set out to hurt anyone and simply did not think of the consequences of his actions which i'm sure will haunt him for the rest of his life without having to deal with imbeciles who are quick to condemn after reading one take on the situation in the local newspaper.

What is being done you ask? Well, i thought you had to pass a driving test and read a book called the highway code AND answer questions on maintainance before being allowed on the roads unsupervised. How can it be the police or governments fault that a grown man chose to drive dangerously? Sort yourself out man.

Whilst it is very tragic and sad that this accident ended with the death of Ashley, it must be remembered that Ashley Fielding will no doubt have to live with the emotional concsequences for the rest of his life. Serving a three year prison sentence will do little or no good. It's seems that the police and local goverment are simply happy as long as there is a scapegoat other than themselves. Whilst Ashley Fielding is not entirely blameless what is being done to educate young motorists both passengers and drivers in the safe use of vehicles, i.e good vehicle maintenance, road sense and behaviour. The answer is NOTHING!!!

So what are you suggestig anon, that by not putting his seat belt on he deserved to die! Lots of people don't wear seatbelts and yes they are taking risks, but the facts are that the driving of an irresponsible fool ended his life. I'm sure you may see it differently if someone you cared about maybe forgat to put a seatbelt and was then killed as a result of the way somebody else drove. We should maybe get the Police to put a ticket on his grave you sanctamonious fool

So I suppose Ashley Connell wasn't being 'reckless & irresponsible' when he chose not to wear a seatbelt?
