Waddington festival something to crow about
POPPIN OUT: Anna Bennett with the Mary Poppins scarecrow created by grandmother Dorothy Aspin
POPPIN OUT: Anna Bennett with the Mary Poppins scarecrow created by grandmother Dorothy Aspin

HUNDREDS of people flocked to Waddington yesterday as villagers adjorned their doorsteps and gardens with weird and wonderful creations for the annual scarecrow festival.

The St Helen's Village Church Scarecrow Festival has been running since 2001 and managed once again to draw in the crowds.

With some scarecrows resembling clowns, astronauts and even Mary Poppins, the village was packed as people made the most of the warm bank holiday weather.

Bernice and Stuart Duhan, of Clitheroe Road in the centre of the village, had staked their clown-style scarecrow in the front garden and were waiting for arrival of up to 50 family members.

Bernice said: "We always have a big family party to coincide with the festival and it's a great chance for us all to get together. We've set up a competition for children to guess the name of the scarecrow as well."

Her sister, Maureen Malone, and husband Derek had even come across from southern Spain to be at the scarecrow bonanza.

John Herd, 69, of Church Close, created a scarecrow in his own image and was collecting funds for disabled facilities to be installed at Waddington Methodist Church.

He added: "We need to raise £350,000 for an electric lift to be installed and what I collect today will go a little way towards that target."

I can't think of anything worthwhile to say about this story.
If there are any other discussions to which I have nothing to contribute, I will let you know.
