Triumph at show for farmer

DARWEN farmer John Whalley triumphed for the third year running at Gisburn Auction Mart's Easter show and sale of spring lambs.

The top bid of the day was £104 for the champion lamb from Mr Whalley. The 12-week-old Texel cross weighed 43kgs and sold to pre-sale judge Richard Hobday of White Peak Farm Butchery, Tissington, Derbyshire.

Suffolk breeder, Geoff Richmond, Garstang, was in the money with his pair of Suffolk lambs, which won the pairs class. Sired by a Conveth ram and weighing 43kgs they sold for £99, again to White Peak Farm Butchery.

Charollais lambs peaked at £95 for a 40kg lamb that went Bowland Foods, Preston. New season lambs weighing 33-39kgs averaged 207p per kilo,
