A DOORMAN died when he lost control of his car after aquaplaning on water and crashed into a tree.

The inquest into the death of Royston Orr heard he had been taking ecstasy and alcohol which could have affected his judgement in dealing with the "atrocious conditions".

And the hearing was told that the tred on the rear tyres of his car were well below the legal limit.

Mr Orr lost control of his Peugeot after aquaplaning on water running across Ribchester Road, Clayton-le-Dale.

The car went into a spin before slamming into a tree, killing Mr Orr instantly, the inquest heard.

Mr Orr, known as Roy, of Greenbank Park, Longridge, worked at Blackburn's Baroque bar in Northgate.

Recording a verdict of accidental death coroner Michael Singleton said there were a number of lessons to be learned from the tragedy.

He said the alcohol level in Mr Orr's blood was below the legal limit, but that ecstasy was also found.

Mr Singleton said: "The alcohol and the ecstasy would potentiate each other and people who take recreational drugs perhaps fail to understand what the effect can be in terms of judgement.

"In the treacherous conditions this night judgement was what was needed."

He said people also did not realise the importance of tyre tread depth and how it could affect a vehicle's performance especially in wet conditions.

The inquest heard Mr Orr was driving to his home at 4am on December 1.

Witnesses told of torrential rain that night and water was running off the fields onto Barker Brow.

The drains could not cope and there was water running down either gutter.

Immediately before Mr Orr's car left the road water was running across the road.

PC Adrian Harrison, who investigated the accident, said Mr Orr had been doing at least 49 mph when he hit the water and his car aquaplaned.

It began to spin before mounting the pavement and slamming into the tree.

PC Harrison said the tread on the rear tyres was between 0.5 mm and 1.3 mm and the legal limit was 1.6.

"Tread helps pump water out and these tyres would have had no ability in that respect," said PC Harrison.

"Once the car started aquaplaning and rotating there was very little the driver could do."

Mark Barnes, assistant area surveyor for Lancashire County Council told the inquest that the gullies were regularly cleaned.

He said when the River Ribble was high water could not drain from the gullies but he said in the 20 years he had been involved this had only happened a handful of times.

The medical cause of death was given as multiple injuries and Mr Singleton recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Roy was a top fella.
At the end of the day, Mr No-One is half-right about the censorship thing, it shouldn't be done.
But, in the same regard, as Hannah points out, the LET messed up by omitting the fact that should have been pointed out at the trial; there had been a case of a car being written-off a matter of hours beforehand on the same road and there were no flood warnings. A series of unfortunate events occurred that didn't deserve to happen to Roy, but, fair and sensitive coverage needs to be maintained. Frankly, 'The inquest into the death of Royston Orr heard he had been taking ecstasy and alcohol which could have affected his judgement in dealing with the "atrocious conditions,"' is an unfair and insensitive piece of newswriting, though, what can one expect from a publication such as the LET? From that quote, one can only assume there are eye-witness accounts that he had taken them, which isn't true.
In summary, I think Mr No-One, that I apreciate the right of free speech, because it's a vital part of why we are a civilised people, but so is compassion and perchance that was lacking in your posts.
But furthermore, I just think people should stop reading the LET. There's a reason people work there and it's because not many other establishments will take them. I think their lacking in editorial and journalistic quality and standards is shown through this and a plethora of other examples.
Best wishes and sincerest condolences to Roy's family.

Well it seems we no longer live in a free country..... ( thank God I don't live in the UK)when comments can be censored when only the facts reported by the LET have been repeated. It is a real shame as it is pointless having a comments page if this is the way it is run.

I'm amazed that my comments have been censored and I have not threatened any one, abused anyone, and just repeated what has been reported by the LET. Ok that's fine but it is a really sad affair when free speech is censored in this way. As I have said before go back over what I have wrote........oops sorry you can't it's been removed so no one can see the full picture any more silly me! What a joke.

what the paper has done is state roy 'took' the drugs... where is the bloody evidence he did??? we don't know how it got in his system, yes he probably had a drink after work which he bloody deserved after a shift of throwing idiotic drunks and trouble makers out of a bar. just think of all the good roy did for the community, 15 years of door work, stoppin people being glassed, beaten up, helping people who have drunk too much and stopping senseless violence. think about that before u jump to conclusions about him. none of us are denying the outcome of the inquest. it has been reported wrongly that it what is so upsetting and has lead to thoughtless and hurtful comments. and the reason me and his family and friends have viewed this sight is to get our point across and to defend his name as he deserves. rip royscy, u were amazing and the people who knew him know that.

Firstly, my genuine sympathies to everyone affected by this tragedy. I too have lost someone close to me in a reasonably similar circumstance - he was walking the wrong way up a country road home from the pub and got knocked down.

But I'm confused. What has the paper done that's out of order? It reports on every inquest in East Lancashire. If the coroner has said Mr Orr died from taking drugs and driving too fast, then what is the paper supposed to do? It would be *against the law* for them to lie and say he died of something else.

I think if you have any argument with anyone, it is with some of the heartless readers who have posted comments here.

I would just like to say that accidents happen, no one is perfect and everyone should look at why they are so perfect before judging someone else. Drugs can remain in the blood for upto 3months in some cases so chances are he never took drugs that night if it was only a trace. My thoughts are with the family and friends and that is all that needs to be said by anyone.

I would like to point out that i have worked with roy for about 3yrs and known him for alot longer and the article and subsequent comments made are a blatent insult to this wonderful persons memmory. We are only just coming to terms with the loss of a loving, honest, witty and beautiful person and me and my work collegues are upset by un-thoughtful and hurtful comments being made comments. RIP roy we all loved you loads. From all your friends, staff and Stewardess of Clitheroe social club.

Whatever, Trevor.

If it were a member of my family, I'd be angry with them for driving a dangerous vehicle dangerously after taking drink and drugs. I'd be sad, but would accept that they were the master of their own downfall.

A few people have said that the story is lies - if that is the case, then I am sorry for all the hurt that has been caused by my comments - although that would be the reporter's responsibility, I think.

If he had knowlingly consumed alcohol and ecstacy before choosing to drive, and if he was knowlingly driving a car with bald tyres (as someone has suggested he was , having already booked his car in for new ones), and if he was driving too fast for the conditions, then we should all thank ourselves that he didn't kill anyone else. If all of these things are true, I really don't see how anyone can be upset that the likes of me and Mr No-one are criticsiing Mr Orr - wtf would you expect us to do?

It's not a condolences board, it a board for commenting on the content of the article above. If someone asked me what I thought about it in a pub, or the canteen, or the bus queue, or anywhere else for that matter, I would say exactly the same things as I have said in my posts.

Like I said, offensive to some, maybe - but perfectly valid and reasonable, too.

As a close friend of Roy and his family and girlfriend I too share the grief they are going through, i think it is disgusting how people can speak ill of the deceased and not spare a thought for his family and friends, just think how you would feel if it happened to someone close to you?! the shoe would be on the other foot and you wouldn't be feeling too great! please have some consideration and keep your fol mouths to yourselves. what a waste of your time to come on here and p**s people off over something you know nothing about! grow up you children! Hi to mr no one,
Roy was my brother & i was at the inquest, yes it was a fact about the esctacy i his blood, only he knows if he took it or not, but i do know that if he didnt feel capable of driving he wouldnt have done. He wasnt so stupid, as for his tyres, his car was booked in at Alpes garage at 10am, on the morning he died, for new tyres, he had gone to work obviously thinking he would be fine, a risk yes, but we all take risks dont we, but his was fatal. I must say if you had known Roy he would have been one of the nicest people you would of known, I know what your saying isnt meant to be cruel to us, but yesterday was a very hard day for my family and me, nothing and no one will ever heal the pain we have, with not being able to see him, slap him or something as silly as doing his washing, im very lucky to have 4 other brothers and lots of good memories of him,

Roy was the nicest person i have met and it is really upsetting to read all these comments about someone YOU dont even know. Roys family and Hannah are goin through enough at the momonet so i suggest if you dont have any thing nice to say about Roy or to his family keep your petty hurtful comments to yourself. RIP Roy i miss you xx

.... And yet you needed to rebut my comment, Have you even stopped for one second to think about what your doing, yes my mistake its not for condolences, I got mixed up, and if Roy’s family want to leave comments and if his family want to find solace in this page so be it, it has been nearly 4 months since the death of Roy, I think its only natural that his family will look at things written about him. It doesn't change the facts that your comments are rude and not to mention hurtful, you may only be stating facts, but they are facts from the media, and what they said the coroner said, did you speak to the coroner personally??? I don't see what you are getting out of this, I personally am not family, my husband is, I am not grieving for myself, but feeling for those who are. Your comments are causing stress and upset to those close to Roy, DID YOU KNOW HIM PERSONALLY?? I doubt this, yes this is a page to comment on, but don't you think your comments are needed. If you like to hurt the family of those who have lost a family member, I believe if you google you will find plenty of other people to target. Or is it you had something against Roy??
You seem to know more than what is written in the papers, I find this a slightly unhealthy obsession, look into your self and find your own problems to deal with, stay away from other people’s problems.
I am not angry, you don't even know me to comment and say calm down, yes the "fact" maybe his tread was low, there was alcohol in his blood, and ecstasy, but this really has nothing to do with the final cause of death, which you seem to of over looked, "The medical cause of death was given as multiple injuries and Mr Singleton recorded a verdict of accidental death"
MR NO ONE if you are so concerned about this matter may I suggest you write to your local MP.
If you were morning a loss, you said you couldn't find the strength to log on here, well Roy’s family do, so but out and leave them be, get this, not every one wants your comments, go create a blog if you feel so strongly. Just leave Hannah and Roy’s family alone. His Sister and brothers had suffered enough, they lost their mother, and now a brother too, just think again before you decide to post a message. They don’t need you adding to there pain.
We all have our own opinions, but sometimes its best not to voice them. Roy was somebody’s partner, son, and brother, not to mention nephew, cousin, and friend. Just drop it please, there are many people being hurt by this. If Roy’s death affecting you so badly mr no one, maybe YOU should seek help. Nothing anyone says or does will ever change what has happened, Roy has gone, and hopefully he is at peace, truth is, no matter how many comments fly back and forth, we cannot change this. I couldn't stand bulling when I was kid, and in my adult hood, I still cannot stand it. You obviously have something to say. But I think your delivery stinks.

The truth is, this site is for condolences not insults, for Hannah and Roys sister and Brothers, if you did not know him personally I suggest you go to a different wed site and give some one else your BAD WORDS! Hannah and Claire have enough on their plates right now they do not need the advice from you two - MORONS! If the shoe were on the other foot and it was your family morning for you, how do you think you would feel?? Also we can all stipulate what happened that night, but to be fair only one man know the truth... and that is ROY, sadly he will never get to tell his side of the story! As for the papers, do you always take what they say as gospel?? MEDIA, that’s all it is, I really suggest you take your negativity elsewhere.
However Roy died, or why is frankly none or your business Mr NO ONE (how aptly named) and Offended... I think you two should maybe find something better to do with your time instead of giving **** to the grieving family of a dead person, who can not even be here to defend himself, is that really how shallow you are?? I think so! Or do you think your being clever?? HAVE A BIT OF RESPECT!
Roy was a kind and gentle man, who would do anything for him family and friends, any one who attended his funeral know he was a very popular person.
My thoughts are with Hannah, Claire and all the brothers, don't let these two **** get you down, no body can change the memories you have of Roy.
And by the way mr no one and offended.... ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUNG...may you two live to a ripe old age, and then suffer for your cruelty.
And Christian is not just commenting on the story above, you insolent T**T, he is family of Roys. So you get YOUR facts right before TRYING to offend people next time.
AGAIN I STATE< THIS PAGE IS FOR CONDOLENCES> So can we keep it to that.

As a trainee journalist I am well aware of the need to create an angle for a story in order to encourage others to read it. However, I am also aware, unlike perhaps the writer of the article (and not forgetting the internal politics of the LET), that there are ways and means of creating a good story without making unsubstantiated inferences. Surely the story would have been more relevant and 'newsy' because someone else wrote their car off a few hours previously? Or how about the fact that nothing has been done since the accident to make this particular stretch of road safer? Maybe the rest of us are cynical. Or maybe some people, including the sad people who search through articles looking for one they can make an impact on by commenting, just don't have anything better to do with their lives.

thanks delyse for your comment. at least it shows some people have dignity and compassion in this situation. the article above is absolute nonsense and my poor boyfriend who is not here to defend himself is being made a scapegoat so the council and other parties can cover up their own mistakes. why has it not gone to press someone else wrote off their car on the same road 8 hours prior to roy's crash?? where were the flood signs and warnings after the first person crashed to warn other drivers?? there is no denying roy had traces of ecstacy and alcohol in his system but he was under the legal limit for drink and where is the proof he took the ecstacy himself? this is slander to his name. he was a doorman and for whatever reason could have needed to leave his drink unattended while he dealt with a situation so spiking IS a possibility. anyone with a brain knows the press sensationalise incidents, look at the Mcann family who have just won a legal case after they were falsy accused of killing their own child. don't beleive all you read. the writer of this article should be completely ashamed of himself for the false statments he has put in this article and for the hurt and upset me, his family and all his friends have had to go through all over again because of him. imagine if you were in our situation, barely 4 months after he is dead there is another front page picture for us to see in shops and a full page piece in the paper. i hope Mr Andrew Bellard, you never have to go through what we have. but i hope even more that an idiotic small minded sensationalist journalist doesn't put you through the pain your article has caused us. and as for 'mr no-one' and 'offended' you should think before speak.
