THREE men who masterminded a £4million car importation fraud have been jailed for a total of five years and three months.

But one of the men - father-of-four Thomas Beard - had his jail term reduced from 12 months to nine after a court was told that he was suffering from a heart condition.

The 46-year-old had his sentence reduced even though he had not paid National Insurance, which help funds the National Health Service which is treating him, for a number of years.

Beard, of Acorn Lodge , Gypsy Caravan Site, Longsight Road, Clayton-le Dale, was part of a group who imported 109 high performance cars over a two year-period.

His associates James Mounsey, 33, and Alexander Howard, 29, both from Morecambe, were also sentenced to 30 months and two years respectively.

All three pleaded guilty to conspiracy to cheat the public revenue and money laundering.

Between April 2004 and April 2006 they imported high value cars including BMWs and Range Rovers from garages in Holland, Belgium and Germany.

They used false identities and bogus companies in order to import the vehicles and then distribute them throughout the UK, evading VAT payments.

Beard was found to have £93,000 in a bank account and a further £91,000 in his home when he was arrested last April.

Judge Hon Christopher Cornwall told Beard: "You have made money at the expense of the community in a democratic society where we are supposed to contribute to the community."

After the case, Detective inspector Lee Halstead, from Lancashire Police's serious and organised crime unit, said: "It was wholly unacceptable and reprehensible to attack the economic well being of our state, which has a responsibility for providing for our nation's health and education.

"Specially trained officers will now endeavour to use the full powers of the Proceeds of Crime Act to ensure that these criminals do not leave the criminal justice system having benefitted from their crimes"

If you want to know who steals from us its the government and the police can i just remind you about inheritance tax. When sentance was passed we all had a good laugh at the police because they have spent so much money and only got an 8 week sentance for mr Beard. 14 milloin drug importation well those charges were soon droped mr Beard had drivin 3 cars into the country and he is a criminal mastermind HA i think NAFEESA SHAN, MR BRIGGS and tha POLICE should look at this as a lession learned and should not accuse people of things they have not done or you end up with egg on your face.

If the reporter has reported the facts of the case it would read that yes there was over 200 police and there was only £90k in Cash TRAVELERS deal in cash and the 14 million drugs importaion charges well they were dropped and out of the 109 cars mr Beard was sent to Prison for driving 3 into the country it has been proved in court that he had nothing to do with the rest of the cars, so how stupid do the police look right now and the reporters for getting it all wrong i pay tax so how much of my money has been wasted on a wild goose chase which has had a man sent to prison for 8 weeks i ask you dont the police ever get it wright.

If you knew this man, you would look at this in a different light. If the paper gave all the facts, you wouldn't be making all these comments. Mr Beard had a honest buissness, was tax payer, all before having his heart attack whilst abroad 9 years ago. What a long wait for a heart opperation! As for the racist comment remember there are good and bad people no matter where you go. What i would wonder is, who has wasted the tax payers money? THE POLICE or Mr Beard?

They have never worked or paid taxes and for at LEAST £184,000 he will serve about 16 weeks. This of course is just the tip of the iceberg.

so what that they have gained. your all jelous because it was not you that had the idea.people who molest children and trash there heads with the long term repecussions are let off to do it again and another proven fact its nearly always so called professionals who are not stealing just molesting our children a crime worse than theft.you can replace an item you cannot replace lost childhood

well, 200 caravans at £1200 per year saved on council tax alone is £240,000! That is a start! Add this together with the amount of money saved by not having to pay for tv licence, gas, electicity, water rates, and all other household bills - this amounts to a considerable amount of money being saved! Who says pikeys don't know what they are doing! Would you rather they committed vat fraud over a few cars or would you rather they robbed your houses, robbed your shops, robbed you in the street, sold drugs to your kids and "groomed" children and sold them into the sex slave business?? Now that is Perspective!

109 motor vehicles at say $40,000 a piece,at least, some would be a lot more, VAT at 17.5% which hasn't been paid, and those are just the cars the old bill know about, i tell you these lads have made a fortune, what the big question i want to know is WHERE DID THEY GET THE MONEY FROM TO BUY THEM? now thats got you thinking Mr Perspective.

Right let's get this right. you can beat someone in the street (community service), you can deal in drugs (community service), you can run someone over and fail to stop with no insurance or licence (driving ban and suspended sentence), you can molest our children (psychiatric help and suspended sentence) but you avoid paying tax on a few cars and you go to jail!! This Country really has its priorities all wrong!!

I am not saying this guy should not have had a jail sentence but what i am saying is this is out of proportion considering what others get for IMO more serious crimes!

I remember the day that the police raided that caravan site there must have been over 200 police officers there, with that kind of manpower and all the investigation afterwards how much has that cost the taxpayer and now the judge will not send him to prison cos he's not so well, he should be made to rot in his cell the thief, he has stole of everyone who pays into this Country. and to rub salt into our wounds and wallets he has the cheek to call his home a gypsy caravan site, who says crime doesn't pay. it makes my blood boil

My friend has been waiting for surgery now for some considerable time, she has paid into this country's NHS all her life, yet cannot seem to get up on the waiting list, I bet this chap doesn't have to wait and will have his operation done whilst serving his 'short' sentence, this is just typical of this countries soft attitude to criminals. i for one am disgusted in this lenient sentence as well, rip the country off in crime and in the states pocket. Pathetic

Confused, Preston says...
5:51pm Fri 11 Jan 08

Obviously mr beard must have connections to a masonic lodge judging by his reduced sentence, i am sure the other two blokes will be wondering why they got more than him???????? whats that expression the 'GRASS' is always greener on the other side, it sure is for mr beard.

Who says that crime doesn't pay?.
How could an honest man accumulate £184,000 by working in an ordinary job.
I doubt very much if the police will recover any of these ill gotten gains.
