A SOCIAL networking page set up in protest against Clitheroe’s new mosque has been closed down.

The group on Facebook, called ‘We Don’t Want a Mosque in Clitheroe’, was started in response to the conversion of the disused former Mount Zion Methodist Chapel, into a community facility and Muslim place of worship.

Clitheroe police contacted staff at the website and the page, which had attracted more than 1,650 people and featured inflammatory comments and photographs, was axed on Wednesday.

The plans were first rubberstamped by members of Ribble Valley Council’s planning committee in 2006, and work started this month.
