Conservatives to scrap 'Labour rose' Lancashire council logo

CONSERVATIVES have announced their first act in charge of county hall – scrapping the council’s ‘Labour rose’ logo.

The Tories have gained control of Lancashire County Council for the first time in 28 years.

And their first symbolic act is to scrap the logo which replaced the traditional Lancashire Tudor rose.

The Tories said the redesigned 2002 emblem was virtually the same as the national Labour Party’s flower.

They plan to revert to a design similar to the original Tudor rose.

Outgoing Labour leader Hazel Harding said the move was ‘taking the council back 10 years’.

Conservative chiefs said the emblem would be phased it out so taxpayers’ money was not wasted.

Geoff Driver, the new county council leader, said: “We and a lot of people feel that the rose that was put into the logo a few years ago is not the Tudor rose of Lancashire.

"It is the Labour rose. It will soon be gone but we will not spend a fortune to change it everywhere, just on things like stationery and the website.

“Unlike Labour, we do not think the people of Lancashire care about logos, but they do care about our services.”

The current logo, seen on county council buildings across Lancashire, was brought in by bosses after the last one, which incorporated the Tudor rose, was deemed out of date.

But it is due to be scrapped after County Coun Driver is formally takes over on June 25.

However, Hazel Harding, who was ousted as leader and also lost her Rossendale North seat last week, denied the 2002 logo mirrored Labour’s rose.

She said: “The Tudor rose is on all sorts of other things like double glazing company logos and we couldn’t copyright it but we can with the current one.

“It was not about me or the Labour party. It was about changing the image of the council.

"If County Coun Driver wants to take it back 10 years he can do it.”

Labour stole the red rose from Lancashire. This is the first step towards reclaiming it.

This will cost money. The Red Rose of Lancashire should remain. I think we need to ask what the cost is going to be before it proceeds. A red rose is a red rose.

Such a shame that the logo takes priority over free school uniforms, school meals, subsidised bus and rail travel for school children, and let's not forget the gritting problems from just a few months ago.

Nice to see priorities taking place :(

Who the hell cares?

This is gesture politics and unfortunately it's not a very promising start from the Tories.

So it was ok for Hazel Harding to change the logo before....but now it's not ok.

And she wonders why the electorate have dumped her out.

Just look at it this way: The Labour Rose council logo represents the 'New' Labour that we have today. That alone is a good enough reason to get rid of it!

Hazel Harding has scored a point there. This seems a good reason for the change of logo - Todays announcement echos the recent to-do when Peter of Oswaltwistle unilaterally decided to change the Hyndburn BC logo.(and the town name)
If this is the way the new rulers are going to proceed,(policy on the hoof), we should all be worried.

"Unlike Labour, who thought it was of great importance, we do not think the people of Lancashire care about logos, but they do care about our services.”

What a load of rubbish. If you think people don't care, why change it?

And I'm pretty shocked that they consider their biggest priority to be changing the logo. Surely if Labour did so badly for the county in recent years, they'd have bigger and more important changed they'd want to announce first than wasting money on changing a picture.

What a load of rubbish!
Get your priority's right L.L.C. Which ever party is in charge the red rose should stay, this emblem has a long and historic connection to the 'Red Rose County" how can you just get rid of it. Lets just start by concentrating on reducing council tax bills. Pathetic!

This is a decision straight fron the book 'Boneheaded Startegy for Beginners'.

As I recall the current LCC-Rose emblem was developed by consultants. So, the money has already been paid and squandered. Getting rid of it will not allow us to get our cash back.

So, the previous administration having frittered this money on the emblem then one may as well get your monies worth - keep the emblem and use it for as long as possible.

The whole point about an emblem in corporate identity is that it's all or nothing. You can't have old and new running together for a long period of time as you no longer have a single identity, and only the geeks of local government will know which is the current one.

Moreover if you re-emblem using wear and tear than it will take about 20 years before the replacement emblem is on every item associated with the County.

If this decision is an indication of the thought processes of the Conservative Group about to take the reigns at County Hall then we're in very deep trouble.

The conservatives should leave this alone it is the symbol of Lancashire not ! labour.
Not a great first move by the Tories in the eyes of lancashire people.

So many Labour moaners. Reminds me of the Norway commentators speech. "You took a hell of a beating last week!!!!!!" It's a Labour Rose, Hazel Harding took the Council back 30 years. So shut up and put up!

Well I think it's a great idea. They have said they are not going to spend money changing it everywhere and I, for one, was always disappointed that the traditional Lancashire rose had been morphed into something resembling the Labour party's emblem. It'll be good to see us return to the traditional non political version. Well done LCC.

They should take them stupid welcome to Lancashire signs down next, some people still see Lancashire as its original borders stood pre 1974, in fact the county palatine of Lancashire as never been abolished in law it still stands, these stupid signs only mark the administrative area of the county council which is completely different to the county palatine of Lancashire, some people may think its trivial, but if your trying to advertise Lancs as a tourist destination, which would help the Lancashire economy then wouldnt it be sensible to remove contradictory signs which leaves people not from the north west confused, never mind pre 1974 even Blackburn, Darwen and Blackpool are marked as seperate areas to Lancs its just an administrative farce.

Milty, I have to disagree with you there I'm afraid. I love driving out of Blackburn to be welcomed back into Lancashire - the signs have to stay!

Id be echoing your words to if I was a Torie sorry them MFs screwed the country up from day one of entering power back in 1979 until leaving in 1997. I would however like to point out Im not saying this Government has done a great job. I would like to see a Government of National Unity in these days. The Cream of the Cream comes to mind and no tax payers cash abusers please.

I have to laugh - quite obviously the Tories contributing to this site do not realise that the Labour Party actually changed their logo last year or so. The Tudor Rose is actually far more like the current Labour logo than the previous one !! How out of touch are they ?
Obviously, if their priorities are the change of a logo then they musn't have many sensible priorities !

What's wrong with vans and many businesses using the Lancashire Rose?

It is just Lancashire people and businesses being proud of their roots.

Clearly Hazel 'I lost' Harding has something against that. A typical left wing socialist nanny state view which we have come to expect of her and her corrupt party.

GENERAL ELECTION NOW!!

The tories did not win power because we wanted them, but because labour did not listen to the wants and needs of the people. So get off your high horse and stop tampering with the unimportant.
The red Rose is the symbol of lancashire, but whether or noy you like the design there are far more important things to do with "OUR MONEY".
is it any wonder that BNp can win seats when the first thought of the new controlling party is to waste money on a pointless and un-neccessary change. will you never learn????
