OVER 1,000 people turned out to the first Lancashire Telegraph Green Day in the historic splendour of Samlesbury Hall yesterday.

Visitors had the chance to learn about their carbon footprint at the day-long exhibition which was supported by a host of businesses and organisations.

The event comprised of several themes, so visitors could discover more about becoming green in a variety of ways.

These included advise for in the home, with displays from Lancashire County Council.

There were also presentations and facts about wind turbines as well as transport and recycling.

Organiser Jane Carter from the Lancashire Telegraph, said: “It went really, really well — the sun came out and everyone was really happy.

“I’d say we had over a thousand people come along.

"All the coaches and the park and ride buses were full, so that has gone as planned.

“The stall holders are very happy — they have sold a lot of food, and the wine and beer sampling was very well received.

“There has been something for everyone.”

Outside displays included a garden and plants roadshow and ideas about recycling, and visitors also watched an owls and birds of prey roadshow.

South Ribble Council gave away energy-saving light bulbs and use-again carrier bags and the Groundwork Trust calculated people’s individual carbon footprints and advised on how they can be reduced.

Andy Mullaney, head of environment at Lancashire County Council, said: “It’s gone really well from our point of view.

“We have given a lot of information out about transport and other tips on making lifetyles greener.

“There has been a very positive reponse from people, and we would certainly be interested in doing something like this again.”

Lancashire County Council provided free half-hourly shuttle bus service from the Walton-le-Dale park and ride site at the Capitol Centre.

A second bus service was run in conjunction with the Lancashire Telegraph and Padiham-based transport company Fraser Eagle, from Ewood Park, the home of Blackburn Rovers FC.

Other sponsers of the event included Towneley Garden Centre, Burnley, Works with Water and motor dealerships, Vantage Toyota and Lookers Vauxhall of Blackburn and Greyhound Ford, Accrington.
