RESIDENTS in a Ribble Valley village are urging people to boycott the local Co-operative store in protest at the organisation’s plans to build houses in the rural area.

The Save Whalley Village action group is staging a demonstration outside The Co-op shop and garage, on the A59, at 10.30am today.

They are campaigning against plans by the Co-op group to build 80 houses on fields off Riddings Lane, Whalley A Save Whalley Village spokesman said: “We don’t understand how a democratic organisation like the Co-op can justify pressing ahead with their plans in the teeth of overwhelming local opposition. The Co-op prides itself on being an ethical organisation, but we cannot see anything ethical about building expensive, and unwanted, houses on a green field site and destroying the fabric of our village and community.

“It will result in increased traffic, pressure on an already-overcrowded school and turn the village into a town. We want to appeal to the Co-op to think very carefully about what damage the plans will do to the village.”
