HOUSES were flooded in parts of East Lancashire due to heavy rainfall last night.

Firefighters from Burnley attended Calderbrook Avenue at 6.30pm after water rose in three houses up to one foot deep.

The team spent around three hours pumping water out of the properties.

At 9.15pm, firefighters were called to Clitheroe Road in Barrow after rainfall had flooded a stretch of the road.

The crews assisted police by pumping water away from the road and clearing blocked drains.

Environment Agency teams worked throughout the night to clear debris following reports of high water levels in Rawtenstall.

Several train services from Blackburn to Burnley were cancelled due to the heavy rainfall.

A fire service spokesman said once the water was removed from the houses in Burnley, the water subsided.

He said: "There was water damage on the walls but there was no serious structural damage.

"No one was injured and the house was evacuated at the time."

A police spokesman said: "We had received a high number of calls about flooding in Whalley, police and the council were in the area closing main roads.

"We advised everyone to avoid the area unless absolutely necessary while the water subsided."

The high winds also caused havoc with Bacup Borough FC's roof almost coming off.

Manager Brent Peters said: "It was terrifying for those who live behind the stands, they were worried that the roof was going to come off and crash into their homes.

“We managed to get up there and tie it all down thankfully, but I’ve never seen it so bad.”

Elsewhere, Mount Carmel High in Accrington has been closed today due to no heating or lighting.
