WALKERS braved the cold December weather to take part in the 20th annual Whalley Walk and Ridiculous Hat Competition.

More than 50 people were accompanied by nine dogs on Sunday for the six-mile circular country trek which took in views of Whalley Golf Course, Read Bridge, Read Hall with a stop at the Game Cock Inn, Great Harwood.

As usual, many walkers wore silly hats, including many that were home-made, for the silly hat competition with the traditional prize being jointly awarded to Shaun and Helen Fenton from Darwen.

The event, started by Ivan Hargreaves, has raised around £3,000 for good causes.

This year’s edition sawDonations topping £165 which will go towards helping out an orphanage scheme in Tanzania.

Ivan said: “Sunday’s event was a great success and it was really good that so many people came out to take part.”
