A PLAN for a new outdoor multi-use games area, green gym and youth shelter for Whalley has been approved by Ribble Valley Borough Council.

The application was originally sent to the council in April 2013 and was finally registered by the council on July this year.

John Smith, of the Whalley Queen Elizabeth Trust, submitted the plan for the playing fields in Mitton Road.

Local residents were invited to send their opinions on the proposed development to the council during July.

Whalley Parish Council said when it was submitted last year that it was fully supportive of the application.

The installations are aimed at young people between 18 and 25 years old and will be located on an unused area of the playing fields.

A spokesman for the applicant said: "This is a level and drained green field area located near to the main entrance to the playing fields adjacent to existing football pitches, cricket ground and tennis courts with open access to the public.

"The whole playing field site has been in use for more than 30 years for football and more than 100 years for cricket and tennis."
